SEQUEL TO DRINKING BOUT. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) MASTERTON, June 14. Charles lan Laing, 26 years of. age, who admitted having consumed more than he could accommodate, was today sentenced on two charges to a month’s imprisonment with hard labour. Laing, when requested by the proprietor of a restaurant to refrain from using obscene language, struck the proprietor on the head* and upset two tables, which were heavily laden with crockery and equipment.

TWO MAORIS ACQUITTED. GISBORNE, June 14. At the Supreme Court, on a. charge of assaulting and robbing a Japanese at Tikitiki, two natives, Keremea Tuliaka and Paiekura Haenga, were brought to trial. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty and the prisoners were discharged. ILLEGALLY TAKING FISH. DUNEDIN, June 14. Three men, Albert William Harris, Frederick Olsen Paterson, and Duncan MeFarlane, w r ere charged at the* Police Court this morning with having trout in their possession* during the close season. The accused pleaded not guilty. Constable {Maeßae* stated that at the mouth of the Leith he saw Harris jump into the water and throw a trout towards the top of the bank. Witness went towards the men, who made off, and Patersen threw a sugarbag he had into the water, from which it *was procured by another man, who brought it to the police station, where witness had taken the men to be interviewed. The men denied having taken the fish, but the Magistrate fined each £2 with costs, and allowed a week in which to pay

ALLEGED THEFT OF SPIRITS. AUCKLAND, June 15. On Saturday afternoon L. D. Nathan and) Co.’s bonded store was illegally entered, and spirtis valued at £°o were removed. Apparently the* liquoi had been taken from the store upstairs by the lift, and loaded on two lorries, one of which was driven off, unloaded and returned. The police have arrested Horace Speight, a motor driver employed by the firm,, on a charge or theft. SENTENCE ON A NATIVE. GISBORNE, June 15. At the Supreme Court, the Chief ’Justice sentenced' a native, Win. Henry Waaka, to three years’ imprisonment for indecent assault.
