Staff-Captain Perry, recently appointed to the Central North Division of the Salvation Army a,s Young People’s Secretary, will visit- Hawera tomorrow, aud will conduct a 'special after-sehoo 1 rally in the Army Hall, when every child attending will receive sometliino- when lie leaves the building. At S o’clock in the evening a public welcome- social is to be accorded the visitor. The staff-captain is a fine instrmnentabst, being able to play both cornet and concertina well, and is considered als'o a- good vocalist. Sir. W. J. Guerin, chief sub-editor of the Evening Post, died at Wellington yesterday morning, aged 63, reports the Press Association. He joined the staff 19 years ago, and was appointed chief in 1922. He had not been in good health for several years. At one time he was sub-editor, and afterwards editor, o'f the Taranaki News, and then sub-editor of the Hawera” Star. He afterwards occupied the same position’ on the Taranaki Herald. He leaves one son and three daughters, Mrs. Guerin having predeceased him several 3-ears ago. Older residents in Hawera and district will remember the late Mr. W. J. Guerin, who was sub-editor of the Hawera Star for several 3 r ears, about 1900. Mr. Guerin was of a quiet- and retiring disposition, hut In* those who knew him and worked with him he was recognised as a man of genuine and sterling worth and an able and conscientious journalist. He had suffered much from ill-health during the past- few years, and news of his death, though not unexpected, will be received by many friends in Taranaki with much regret, as the passing alvay of. a man whom to know was to esteem.
