The steamer Oplii arrived this morning from Nelson with a. fire on board. No particulars are availab’e yet. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 14. The fire on the Opihi was discovered about 8 a.m., when th<r*vessel was off Cape Egmont. Full speed was made for port. On arrival the vessel was berthed at Moturoa wharf, the fire brigade called, the hatches lifted, and emergency gangs put on to discharge 900 tons of general cargo. A whitish smoke and smell of toasted potatoes came from the hold, apparently between hatches two and three on; the starboard side. About one o’clock flames were seen issuing from some timber. The fire brigade turned; the hose on and subdued them. The work of discharging is proceeding interruptedly, but the actual seat of the fire ha® not yet been reached. Apparently it originated in Dunedin cargo, which included matches.
