N.Z. BUTTER CHAMPIONSHIP.
COMMENT ON THE QUALITY. The butter and cheese competition at the Auckland' Winter Exhibition this year again attracted entries from all parts of New Zealand (says the New Zealand' Herald). The entries received totalled 362, an increase of 130 compared with last year. The' judges, members of the Government grading staff, commenting on the exhibits, said the. quality and general appearance of all the butter and cheese staged, for competition was well maintained, and thoroughly typical of high-grade New Zealand quality. In the butter section some fine qualities were met with', and this was specially noticeable in the “ Taken from. Export. ’’ clafes. In. this class a true indication. of quality was evidenced,, as the butters entered were not made specially for show purposes, but were taken,'at haphazard and, unknown to .'the milkers, -frOm an incoming consignment to the cool stores. At the time of judging the entries were two months’ old. and! as this was the period taken ‘by an export consignment to reach the London market, it was quite indicative of the every-day quality of New Zealand goods overseas; . . „ , , In the cheese section, as m the butter, fine flavours! and bodies were in evidence. In the rimless class the winning entry called for special mention. The finish and get-up were absolutelv- : perfect, and makers were advised .to take this for an ideal of export cheese. According to London reports,Wit was now necessary that all New Zealand cheese should, be made in rimless hoops,, thus securing a uniform shapepiand a cheese with a: minimum wastage.
