FISHING AT TAUPO.

MINISTER’S REPLY. TO RECENT STATEMENTS. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, June 14. The Taupo Angler’s Association recestly protested against the proposal, said to emanate from the Government, to abolish the present short period licenses, but the Hon. R. F. Bollard has stated that the Government has no such intention. He also referred to the statement, credited to an American visitor, that the finest fishing in America was the sole privilege of the wealthy, and that New Zealand was heading in the same direction. This also was erroneous. The primary object of the negotiations with the natives and others concerned w r as to pre_ vent such a state of affairs. Mr. Bollard added that requests had been received to prohibit trolling within 300 yards of any part of the shores of Lake Taupo, but he could not agree, except possibly at the mouths of streams, especially the Tongariro and Waitahamii.
