Employment for over 120 men during the winter month® is being provided by the Bailway Department, in connection with the construction of the new marshalling yard at Middleton and the reorganisation of the Addington car and waggon workshops (state® the Lyttelton Times). At present there is considerable 1 activity on both jobs, and the men employed will be kept on during the remainder of the winter months. There can be no doubt that the putting in hand of these works at the start of the winter has had the, effect, of considerably alleviating •the unemployment position in Christchurch. The construction of the Middleton yard is now so well advanced that there seems every likelihood that it will be available for use by the department in about four or five months' time.
