-♦ ARRANGEMENTS PROGRESSING WERE. SUCCESS ASSURED. Excellent progress is, being made in the general arrangements for the Empire week to be held in connection with the Hawera Winter Show, which will open on June 30. Everything promises well for a great success in every way. WINDOW-DRESSING. , There* has been a most satisfactory response in the window-dressing competition, and to date no less than eighty entries have been received. The closing date is still some time ahead. While in Wellington during the weekend, the organiser (Mr L. O. Hooker) interviewed the British Manufacturers' Association, and as the result five gold medals were donated by members for men’s outfitters, boots, ironmongery, groceries, and cycle and motor supplies. In addition, Mr L. D. Hurst, representative for Copestakc, Crampton and Co., has given a gold medal for the drapers ' section. Mr Hooker has been given an invitation to attend the next meeting of the association on June 14. It is confidently hoped that this part of the Empire- week’s arrangements will be specially interesting. The acting president of the association is Mr Salmon, a son of Mr W. .1. Salmon, formerly postmaster here. He is particularly interested in the scheme. THE FARMERS’ TRAIN. Mr H. Welsh, business agent for the railways in Auckland, has acknowledged, receipt of the ten thousand dodgers sent to him by the Empire Week Committee, and advises that those have all been distributed amongst the suppliers of the Waikato dairy factories, lie expressed the hope that the committee was meeting Avith the same success in arranging accommodation as he was in making arrangements for the visit of the farmers, and he felt sure that with the usual generosity of the public of Hawera and district, all difficulties would be surmounted. A letter will be sent out asking for help from the residents of the town and district. CHILDREN’S PUBLICITY scheme; This is going to be one of the great features of the week, and very much interest is being taken in all quarters. Circular letters in specially prepared envelopes, all supplies by the Government Publicity Department, have come to hand and will be distributed during the coming A\ r eek to the children in 380 schools. / DECORATIONS SCHEME. The committee advises that the supplies of manuka and other material required will be delivered in Hawera on the Monday of Empire Week, and men will be employed to assist business people in their efforts on behalf of the Empire Week Committee, by decorating their premises artistically. The town will be beflagged and 'two big arches will be symbolic of the occasion. The committee is receiving generous support in the way of donations. Amongst these are sums of £5 each from the licensee of the hotels. Letters have been sent to all dairy factories asking for assistance in the Avork of feeding the children AA'ho Avill be here from the whole districts of Taranaki and Wanganui. ADVERTISING. Arrangements have been made .with the N.Z. Government Publicity Department and with the Railway Departmenr as the outcome of which two special films will be made, one of the Farmers’ train and matters connected with the trip, and this will be used for publicity purposes all over New Zealand. This is being done AAdth the assistance of the railway authorities, "who are showing much interest in the scheme. Enpassant it may be added that the Railway Department intends to issue a special booklet to all travellers by that train to Hawera and to all who entertain farmers at this end. Rarely, it may bo said, has such interest been sho'wn, and it must do a great deal in advancing the interests of farmers. The other film will be on Empire lines and very valuable to the whole of the Empire/ It Avill be of interest to recall that the origin of the Empire Week scheme- took place in Hawera, the smallest borough, in area, in Ncav Zealand. It will be very gratifying to all those who have taken a keen interest in the Empire Week scheme since its inception in Hawera in 1917 to know that the scheme is proceeding so satisfactorily.
