TANGARAKAU.
(From Our Own Correspondent). HEAVY RAINS. The iiicleuhant weather which has been so general throughout New Zealand during the last few weeks was responsible for a considerable amount of inconvenience to the people of Tangai alcau, for at oii e stage the very heavy rainfall brought down numerous slips along the tramway between here and Tahoia, and practically severed communication altogether. For two weeks the Public Works train was unable to make th 0 whole journey through to Tahora, and necessities were brought into camp only after a good deal of trouble. The settlement, too. presented a. sorry spectacle, for the incessant rain gavo little time for the surplus water to drain away, and the consequence was that the place looked like a sea of mud. Work was carried on only under difficulties, especially the more urgent- work of clearing away tlie slips, but the extensive damage done a.nd the continual rainfall made progress slow. The first train was ab’e to'pass through to Tahora on Tuesday last, but even now much care ba-s tc be taken in travelling on the line. It is pleasing to report that we are experiencing at the present time a calm after the storm, and we are hoping that this change for the. better is a lasting one. EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE,.
A very enjoyable euchre party and dance was held in the schoolroom, at Tangarakau on Thursday night, AM arrangements were 111 the hands of the Football Club social committee, the members of which carried out- their duties to the satisfaction of all. Afore than ordinary interest was taken in the euchre on Thursday night, -as 1 it was the- last night of the aggregate competition- which -has been running for the last three months. The aggregate nrize.s were won by Airs Houston (ladies) and Air Aleredith (gents), while the prizes for the evening’s euchre were won bv Airs Houston ('a-dies.) and Air Mischeski (gents). After euchre, supper was served, and dancing was then the. order of the evening until 12o'clock, when the party broke up. FOOTBALL AIATCH.
The Tangarakau football team journeyed to YVlnuigamomona last Saturday to take part in a friendly game with the local team. The day was .ideal for foothal 1 , for there was no wind, yet tho, air was rather chilly. Quite a large number of enthusiasts lined the banks early in anticipation of the game, and during its progress they used their voices to their full capacity, but even their efforts could not urge the borne team t» victory lor Tangarakau proved, too -strong. The first half was fairly even, ending up (3 points to 3 in Tangarakau’s favour, but in the second half tlie maroons, in their characteristic fashion, suddenly woke up and ran up 19 points in no time. Superior combination told throughout the game, and although Vhangamoinona- did their share -of the attacking, they lacked the finish necessary to consistent scoring. The game, which was being played in the rapidly-failing light, ended up Tangarakau 25, Whangamomona 6. Shewry -scored for AYhanganioniona and one pen a: 1 tv was kicked, while tries were scored for Tangarakau by Afisheski. Houlahan (2), Evans and Ho-hai-a (2).
