WAIKATO OPENED BY PRIME AIINISTER, (BY TELEGBAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ELAMILTON, June 1. Til© Waikato Winter Show was opened to-day in beautiful weather by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) before a large attendance. Mr Coatee referred to the value of such exhibitions and to the excellent display of agricultural produce, which afforded a. splendid demonstration of the special feature of the Auckland provincial district, especially of the Waikato. Speaking generally of the agricultural industry, Air Coates said that the past season had been: unsatisfactory from a climatic point of view, with a late spring and a drought in Hawke’s Bay, the East Coast and Alarlborough, although the conditions in Auckland, Taranaki and Canterbury had been better.
The chief features of the agricultural year had been the substantail increase in the number of .sheep, whilst there had been a decline in: the production of butter-fat and a. shrinkage in the number of cattle. The market features were a fall in. the value of wool, lamb and mutton, with a smaller decline in the value of butter and cheese. THE OTAGO FUNCTION. DUNEDIN, June 1.
