Air. H. G. Dickie, M.P., left Hawera' this morning to attend the lieturned Soldiers’ conference at Wellington this week. ■ While in the. city Mr. Dickie will see the Prime Minister on behalf of the unemployed in Hawera. Mr. L. J. Bull, postmaster at Hawera, is at present on annual leave, and during iiis absence Air. J. W. Yelviu is acting as jjostniaster. At the general meeting of the Matapu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on Friday last, a motion of sincere! condolence was .passed with Mr E. Keighley junr., and also with Mr W. Brown and then- relations on the death of Mis Keighley and Mrs Brown.
Mr. Dfavid Virtue, who. has been town clerk of Tiina.ru for the past .21 yeans, died suddenly last night of heart failure, at the age of 68. He bad been .at his office all day a«. usual, and wla.s .sitting .reading ibv the fire at Ibome after .tea, when lie suddenly expired.— Press. Aissn.
A “guid Scotch- fareweel” was tills morning tendered to two popular citizens of Hawera, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Campbell, who left by the mail train on an extended tour to England and Scotland. There was a large attendance of personal friends and members of the Scottish Society at the station, and two pipers 6f the Hawera Pipe Band played selections of Highland music. Streamers were connected and just before the train drew out- “Auld Lang Syne” was sung.
A. pleasant and successful function in the form of a kitchen tea was given to Miss E. Baweliffe, on the eve of her approaching marriage, by Mrs. 'A. W. Muir, at her home, Princes Street Extension, on Thursday evening last. Miss Rawclifte was the recipient of many useful gifts, and the toast of her health and future happiness was cordially honoured. Mr. Torrens suitably replied on her behalf, and thanked the guests, and also the hostess, for their kindness. Various competitions were held, and! music and dancing helped to make the evening a most enjoyable one. Sensible and scientific. “Nazol” for colds, coughs. influenza.
