When tlio members of the Napier Chamber of Commerce assembled on Thursday afternoon, says the Daily Telegraph, a letter was received from an absent member, Mr. 11. A. Wranklyn. drawing attention to the fact that a great deal of New Zealand was being /allowed, to go batik wards, 'and that the agricultural population was decreasing to an alarming extent. The letter enclosed, printed jnfoimution to the effect that in 1923 there were 14(3.380 persons permanently employed on the land, and in 1924 the number had' decreased to 143,699. while the figures for 1925 were 142,742. Further, it was stated that, approximately speaking, this year the increased area of the Dominion’s land under fern was 127,009' acres, and the increased area of barren land was 178.090 acres. It was ' eventually decided to forward the letter to the Farmers’ Union. A cabled message from Brisbane says that Mr. G". Waine, a member of the Ivina Beach Surf Club, picked a fight with a large shark in shallow water recently. Armed with a. spear, Waine deliberately went into the surf and tackled the'shark, inflicting a deep wound on its body. Then the monster, gave up the fight, and managed to get away into deep water. Sharks abound on the coast just now. They are following huge schools of mullet.
