NOTES AND COMMENTS,
(By Telegraph.—Special to Star)
WANGANUI, May 20.
The winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club opened under anything but favourable weather conditions, a form of Scotch mist falling as the horses paraded for the opening event, but-, while it became colder, the rain held off remarks by well. Despite the climatic conditions, and the fact that only seven events ware run against eight on the corresponding day last year, the •‘tote’’ turnover reached £26,435, ail increase of £lO9. Although the imported Ballymoy 11. drew the outside •position at the starting post, she began best of eighteen runners for the Puma Flack, but can be counted lucky to win from Royal Elm, the saddle on which slipped hack at the barrier rise, yet Baflymoy 11. only just heat him. A useful trio in Bustler, Merry Singer -and Kendal tilled the positions in the Hack Steeplechase, and all three should pay their way over the country. Puwhero tried to win the Wanganui Steeplechase from end to end, and was ■leading Eerie by nearly a hundred yards, with a half-mile to go, vet Eerie beat him.
Ballymoy 11. carried nearly twice the amount invested on any other runner for the Puma. Hack, Mime wild Scvena. being the only other starter® seriously supported. When the tapes rose Ballymoy If. was actually quickest to begin, but Wlienuanui soon went to the lead, being attended by Ballymoy 1,1.. Joy Bird, Royal Elm and Merle. There was lithe between those mentioned as they- raced in to the straight. Imt Ballymoy 11. ran on well to heat the unlucky Royal Elm. avlio.sc rider was helpless. Wheminui was a close third, then came Jov Bird, Reriiithia, Merle .and C aptain Gazele.v.
Merry Singer was a £4OO-Iletter favourite tlian .Bustler lor the Hack Steeplechase, with Kendal another ££oo away. Kendal led Undo Dave and Busb'-er over the initial jump, hilt SansnJino soon took charge and led Velvet King, Uncle Dave and Bonny Bill over the early stages. Racing to the stand. Merry Singer led from Kendal, Bustler and Bonny Rid. Racing up the hack stretch. 'Merry Singer was ten lengths; clear .of Kendal, with .Bustler another three lengths away, but three furlongs front the post Merry Singer began to tire, .and Bustler passed him. Racing to the last jump lover the filin’' stages. Bustler ran on well, to heat Kenda-1 bv two lengths, with Merry Singer another half length away, followed by Gilgai. Bonny Rill and Uncle Dave.
Landbird (£1916) was favourite for the Wanganui Steeples, but Peter Maxwell (£1750) had a big following, Passin’ Through (£1000) being third, hut Eerie (£413) was comparatively neglected. Land bird : ed over the initial jump from Peter Maxwell and Puwhern. Then the last-named took charge, and over the next, mile was followed hv Landbird. Peter Maxwell and Master Peter. Jumping faultlessly, Puwhero led past the stand, many
lengths clear of Landbird, Eerie and Mateer Peter, and for the next njile there was no alteration in the leading ]x>sitions. Puwhero led at the stand double by a dozen lengths from Landbird (jumping badly) on the final circuit, and .Master Peter lost his rider at this double. With six furlongs togo, Puwhero was fifteen lengths out from Landbird, with Eerie another few lengths away. With a half-mile to go, Pmvhero looked unbeatable, while Landbird was .just struggling through his jumps. Puwhero started to tire two furlongs from home, at which point Landbird almost fell. Puwhero was many lengths in front of Eerie at the last jump, but stopped almost to a walk over the" final stages, and Eerie cam© along at a leisurely pace to 1 beat him, with Landbird six lengths away, and Peter Maxwell next.
Mount Marita carried 390 more tickets than Zircon for the Back Hurdles, the best blacked of other runnel's being Mountain Bell and Good Sport. Lucius wais just iu front of Slump-, Ruby Ring and Good Sport at the first jump, then Ruby Ring went out a.s pacemaker, and Wihen. paisising the stand Iliad Lucius, Good Spoilt, Slump, and Ail Wind as. hits closest follower®. Racing down the back. All Wind went to the front from Slump, Lucius ‘and Zircon. At the .straight entrance All Wind wWw just in front of Zircon -and Raiigiiitiaihi, but racing over the last jump, Ranlgiitall.i took charge and ing on ksitrongly won easily from Zircon. ISliU.imp was a fair third with Mount Mjahta a close fourth and All Wind' next.
Koauau (£1470), Comedy Prince (£1144), and Gaze (£'o3B) were the favourite selections for the Century Hurdles. When the field was dispatched Koauau drew out to lead Euchre, Many Colours, Prince Rufus and Comedy Prince. After going half a mile Euchre took the lead and AAfae followed by Many dolours .and Koauau. At the stand Euchre still led from Comedy Prince ,Koauau and Many Colour®. Racing up- the back, Sian Fera. ran through to join Eluchre land this pair were well clear of Many Colours, Koauau .and Gaze.. Racing to the straight Gaze moved' up fast and had the race won at the last jump, scoring very decisively from; San Ferlai, which only just beat the last finishing Koauau. Euchre wais a, good fourth and Prince Rufus next.
In the -Connolly Handicap. Nippy and Dlegage (£1334) were much better supported than Merry Day and Euphonium, which followed in that order. When the tapes rose Glenross, Nippy and Euphonium began best and passing, the stand were followed by Glen gar iff and Olandhu. Racing up the back .sibretch Glenrasis was well dear of Nippy, Olympic, GLandhu, Glengja.rtiff and ‘Sun,shot. Racing t® the straight, Glenross wais just in front of Nippy, Olympic, Glengariff and Ur alia. Once in a line for the, winning post, Uralla ran to the lead, but stopped very quickly and Nippy land Glengariff fought out- a. great duel which went to Nippy by a, short head, with Ural la, Vaward and 01ym,pic all close up. A dlay of good racing concluded with the Borough Handicap, for which event, Rerang (£4 431) xv'a.s first favourite from Deluge (£1262), Lo Choucas (£1260) and. Tukia. (£1033). AVhen the tapes rose Booideer, Royal Damon, Tukia, and Benzonia began quickly, but at the end of the first furlong led from Rioylal Damoii, Tukia and Oration. At the three furlongs post R|oy;a:l Damon took charge and ho wins just in trout of Tukia'. Sera, tig and Oration at the straight entrance-. Over the I.a.st furlong a good race eventuated, Rerang run tiring on heat Royal Diainon, with Tukia a. voiy close third and Oration fourth.
