NEW ONES BEING PREPARED. REPLY TO TARANAKI REPRESENTATIONS. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WELLINGTON, May 20. Replying to representations made by the Taranaki School Committees’ Association. Dr. Marsdon. Assistant Director of Education, stated: The only uniform j-eader in use in the schools is the School Journa'. All other reading matter varies from school to school, and it cannot he said that there is too much uniformity i» this, respect. The present text books are not entirely suitable. and new ones: are in the- course of preparation. The present books have been in use for fifty years, and ashorter term is scarcely advisable, as it would impose undue burden, on .parents. The Government cannot agree to .the issue of free schoo' stationery, owing to the very large cost involved.
