NEW YORK, May 19. 'William S. Vare, of Philadelphia, advocate of beers and vines, has secuied the Republican nomination, to the United States Senate, defeating Senator G. AV. pepper, the present- incumbent, nnd Governor Pincfiot, the “dry” candidate. The “wets” hail it as a victory, while the “drys” point out .that the combined votes of Pepper and Pmchot are expected to exceed Vare’s votes by ever 150,000. Vare’s biggest vote was in the cities, and the other candidates’ votes in the rura.] districts. Republican nomination, practically means an election in Pennsylvania. In the meantime, Governor Smith, of New York, has announced that he would sign a Bill providing for a State referendum on the question whether the Volstead law should be liberalised bv Congress-. Governor Smith declared that this was the only way to find! how the- people stand. .
