FIRE ON THE MAKURA.

OUTBREAK IN THE BUNKERS.BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT; SYDNEY, May 20. Considerable damage was caused by fire in the Makura’s . stokehold. The origin is unknown. The smoke quickly penetrated -all the cabins, in many of which the passengers were preparing for the voyage, who quickly removed their baggage to the wharf. When the oil caught fire the flames travelled- with extraordinary rapidity over the whole of the tanks, and, members of the crew had to rush to the deck.

The fire brigade were assisted by two fire floats, and after an hour’s fight in dense smoke, which frequently drove the fighters back, they extinguished the outbreak.,

The vessel is ex pee ted to sail at- noon on Friday.
