CYCLE ROAD RACE.
KAPONGA ENTERPRISE,
FORMATION OIF CLUB PROPOSED.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
Mr A. Melville, secretary of the Knponga Athletic Club, has for some time past been interesting himself in the encouragement of bicycle riders, and his. endeavours have reached fruition in the form of an eleven-mile- handicap road, 'race,' which will be ridden on Saturday next.
The course decided upon takes in the, Manaia, Sheet, Palmer and Bltharn roads. The event is the first of a series of six races, for which a, pioiitsprize is offered. The Ivaponga Athletic Club has generously donated a, handsome three-guinea- gold medal of appropriate design as first prize in the series. Mr Melvil'e is sanguine of securing donations of trophies for second and third places, and possibly for fastest time.
It is the intention of local cyclists to form a club, and, judging from, the number of entrants in the- initial event, this should be an easy matter. For Saturday’s race Mr Melville has declared the following handicaps: —H. Bocoek scr.. F. Litchwark 40secs., A. Martin 45. H. Blackwell, S. Jndson 60, J. Sullivan 901 W. Leppard, J. Payne, R. McCarthy 120, H. Thorpe, G. Payne, S. Tanner ISO, C. Dawson, W. Hislop 195, G. Williams, S. Blackwell, H. George, D. Curran, G. Boyle, C. Harrison 211).
The son-'c of points for the series is: First, 4; second, 2; third, 1: fastest time, 1.
