TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE.
♦ PASSENGERS ON THE OTRANTO. BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, May IS. Mr W. A. Dettman, of Sydney, is the first of the Otranto’s passengers to reach London. He said the passengers had a most terrifying experience, though there was no panic. He paid a tribute to the courage wherewith all the passengers stood by Avearing lifebelts during the two hours of uncertainty. When the. collision was imminent an officer at the bow promptly ordered the seamen from the forecastle. Eighteen just managed to rusli out before the crash, though one was struck by the smashing timbers and had a portion of his face practically torn away. Mr Dettman was: just leaving the dining saloon when lie was hurled a distance, his leg being badly bruised. It is learned at Lloyd’s that the estimate of the damage is over £IOO,OOO, and will necessitate a new bow. The vessel proceeds to the Clyde for the purpose of repairs, and will be out of commission for some months.
