MATCH. WITH ALA .RYLEBONE

MACARTNEY’S GOOD STAND

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT

Received 2.10 p.m. to-day. LONDON, May 17. The attendance at the cricket match was 10,000, including the Prince of Wales. . , , Alia i Ley’s batting; was particularly bright, Ibut the bowlers, quickly finding their length, compelled caution. Falcon wa.s twice unlucky is not getting Oldfield’s wicket. Iktrdisley, before lie scored, gave, a chance at the wicket off Haig. Oldfield played attractively in front of the wicket. He made a couple ol lucky -smacks, and then, while -attempting a third, was smartly taken at seen ml .slip by Cta.tr. Collins made ah unusually quick start, hitting Haig to leg for a. lour and a two in the first over. DartLsley, when four, was given the benefit of the doubt in a confident appeal for stumping off Kennedy. Ho gave another chance .at 11 off Haig and was beaten by the next ball, an excellent off-lbreak which-just removed the bails. . Stevens relied on an effective break from leg and Haig upon mixed pace and a break .as' well.

Collins, at 13. lifted Stevens to square leg .boundary over the head of Hend-ren, who made a desperate and unsuccessful effort to reach, it. Macartney played steadily all round the wicket and severely punished overpitched -balls from Stevens, who was erratic) and expensive. He reached 50 in 45 minutes. Both he and Collins played very freely and gained many runs from powerful straight drives-. Collins was completely deceived by ail apparently straight bia.ll from Astill, which broke a foot fro-m the off. He had three fours and had played soundly. After his dismissal batting slackened.

Macartney played the bowling confidently, .but was unable to penetrate the field. Eventually Smart .stumped him while jumping out to drive Hjaig. His score included five, fours. His partnership with Collins yielded 82. Taylor, when three, made -a hard drive which Falcon dropped -at silly point. Kennedy and Haig kept Taylor and Fonsford on the defensive, and it was the best bowling phase of the day. Bad light and heavy clouds added to the difficulties of the, batsmen and play -was temporarily adjourned. Ponsfordi got in good strokes off the middle of the bat and straight drove each bowler to the boundary a few minutes after resumption, and play was then again adjourned for the same cause. The crowd became impatient, demanding a continuation of play, which was resumed at 5.15.

Kennedy and Falcon immediately found the length, forcing the batsmen to the defensive, though nine were knocked off Falcon in one over, Kennedy could not fee scored from, and was unlucky in not obtaining a wicket. P'onsford hit with more certainty and power as - 'time, progressed. Ryder is-ucaumbed to a splendid inswinger from Haig. Gregory put new life into- the game by leg glancing Kennedy nicely, and sending Haig to leg for two fours and three in one over. ~ Ron s.f orcl was not aggressive, but was safe.

Gregory Wa.s taken at mid-off -after twenty-five minutes. He hit five fours. The fielding was clean and smart, notably Hendr.an, and Franklin proved to be an excellent wicket-keeper. Haig got much work on to' the ball and frequently bacl the batsmen guessing. Kennedy bowled magnificently, his length ancl pace throughout being excellent . —Reuter.
