NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas). Alaric ran poorly at- Egmont, and his form is puzzling his trainer. In his initial attempts in open company,. Benzora showed excellent form, and he promises to give Trainer O. Jackson more successes. Although carrying only a few pounds above the minimum at Egmont, Lady Bentinck again raced poorly, and Trainer Cox must be well nigh tired of the brown mare.
Prior to racing at tile Egmont meeting oil Saturday last, Dubious had done very little work, but tills does not excuse Iris rider for the extraordinary manner in which Dubious was ridden. Mount Marta’s jumping can i>e improved. but, nevertheless, lie did well for a novice at hurdle racing. Having size and pace, Mount Marta should do really well over hurdles. It is now well established that Saturday is a suitabo day to race on in Hawera, as the last two winter meetings have convinced the officials of the Egmont Racing Club. L. Reed did not handle Rational with his tisua] skill on Saturday last, and, judging by the "manner in which Lational finished, he appeared to have been unlucky. The wins of Vaward, Glengariff and Benzora in the principal flat events at the Egmont meeting should do much for the young sire Bisogne, who, with very limited opportunities, has gained thirteenth position amongst this season’s sires. Considering the opposition, the record is a good cue. Looking bright, Eerie w‘is given a run in tile big handicap at Egmont on Saturday. This inure will] be ridden by H. Burt at Wanganui on Thursday. In the past, San Fera, has not been favoured with the best W luck in his races, which have been hist through: no fault of th e . son of Feramorz. This gelding will have FT. Burt in the sadole ill the Century Hurdi'e race at Wanganui on Thursday next. I t is stated * that W. Bowden will ride Landbird and Koauau in their respective engagements at- Wanganui. Bowden compares with anv of our oldtime hurdle riders, and is much superior to the vast majority of those riding to-day. Besides the classic two-vear old Limerick, Trainer F. D. Jones will, a-so take Young Lochinvar to Sydney for the spring campaign. While the latter may not stay on like Limerick, he lias shown brilliancy in two-year-old races this season.
On the opening day of the Egmont meeting, Rehutai’ost a good deal of ground over the early stages of her race, but was running on at the -r:d. OnSaturday Lebutai was taken to the front, hut jumped badly, and soon lost any chance she possessed. Kareao .ran two solid races at the Egmont meeting. On Thursday he was always well placed, and only went un<L r to two good ones by a narrow margin. Kareao was asked to give Alount Marta a dozen lengths start over the last six furlongs on Saturday, and he did wel 1 to finish as close as lie did. That fine performer, Ngata, was supported bv the right people on Saturday last, but a had run extinguished any chance lie may have possessed. Brigadier Bill was hacked with confidence by his connections for the eon-
iuflil!!>■ event at the Eginout meeting. He got a piirt.iculni’iJjV burl run, but, (■v n then was only neaten by half a head. while his victor, Kilia, was always well placed in the race. fiut for being carried out very wide ufc Kgmont on Saturday, Sovena must have "’.von. As things- were, she put in a- great run, but was unable- to give so eh an advantage t-o Captain Gaze-ly. After the fine, race Captain Gazely ran on Thursday to those good backs Eden Hall and Subjection, it was indeed surprising to find him neglected for his .engagement on Saturday. The success of Eden HaM and Captain Gazely was idea-sing to R. It rough’s friends. Kendai made an excellent jump at the first fence on Saturday, while be put in an extra big leap at the second one. which ended in bis rider becoming unba’ianced and falling off. With the Egtnont meeting passed, it, can truthfully be said that little or no light has been shecl on the Northern “double.” Certainly some of the runners exhibited signs of fitness, but their form as a guide for RYlerslie was not such as to cause enthusiasm. Pass in’ Through must be, given credit for an excellent performance on Saturday. its he gave Pmvhero a. big start over tli; last half-mile. To a large extent the win of the gelding was due to the judgment of the rider (H. Burt), who saved at least four lengths on
Passin’ Through over the last six furlongs, and. as he only beat Puwhero by half a head, one can realise what part Burt played in the success. Still, Passin’ Through’s finishing run was a splendid one. Apprentice jockey T. Green shows much vigour and a good deal of judgment for a young and light rider, hut, judging by appearances, this lad will not- be able to ride light for many years. A couple of months ago Green was able to go to the scale at 7 stone, but at the Egmont meeting on Saturday he could not ride lighter than 7.5. Of course, all hoys put on weight with the cold weather.
