FIRE AT BLENHEIM.
FURNITURE SHOP DESTROYED. BRICK WALL COLLAPSES. IBY TEIiEGKAPH. T'TIKSS ASSOCIATION.) BLENHEIM, May 17. A ■disastrous fire last, night destroyed Wenslev’s furniture shop iin Alfred strret, together with ..a huge stock. A brick wall collapsed on the adjoining shop of J.. Dowling and Co., and its stock was much damaged by falling debris and water. Thomson and LI a lifer, music dealers, on the other side of Wenslev’s, suffered minor damage by smoke and water. At one stag? it appeared that the Municipal Chambers would be destroyed and the borough archives were removed, while the crowd rescued portraits of past mayors from the Council Chambers. The Municipal) Buildings, however, escaped damage. Wenslcy’s shop was insured for £2450 in the Phoenix and the stock for £3OOO in the London, Liverpool and Globe. This will not cover the damage sustained. Mrs Weosley is at- present in Christchurch. Dowling’s stock was covered bv £SOO, and the machinery by £llO in the Sun Office, and its building, which was owned by Miss Lucy Adams, was insured for £4OO an the London, Liverpool and Globe.
