AUSTRALIANS V. MARYLEBONE. HOME TEAM SCORES 199. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. LONDON, May 15. The M.G.C. opened its innings against Australia before an attendance of 18,000 on a sodden wicket. The home team: was dismissed for 199. Australia had mad© 12 runs without the loss of a wicket when stumps were drawn. From the Australian team Andrews, Girimmett, lien dry, Ellis and Everett were omitted. The weather was fine but cloudy. Rain’overnight had mad© the wicket very soft, a portion of the outfield being sodden, and the start was delayed until 12.45 p.m. Falcon won the toss, for Marylebone and elected to bat. Gregory and Macartney were the bowlers to Maoßryan and Stevens. The former was caught in the' slips off Gregory’s, fifth ball. Sawdust was soon- (requisitioned. Gregory was kicking, but maintained a better length than in the previous matches. Hendren immediately found his feet, placing Gregory to leg for two and Macartney in the same direction for three. ‘He then scored 1 several smart singles off Gregory. Both he and Stevens played Macartney confidently. Macartney occasionally got a big turn, but the ball rose slowly from the pitch. After luncheon the weather was overcast and cold. The resumption was quiet, both Richardson and Macartney spinning well. Only a couple were scored in six overs. The fielding was keen, and the crowd was quickly appreciative of a good save or throw in. The batsmen took an hour to get 50. Hendren succumbed to a ball from Richardson, which came off liis pads. He o-ave an excellent exhibition of leg play. &rr wa given an ovation on going out to bat. Richardson, in the afternoon, was bowling more slowly and irelying on a finer spin. Carr was unhappy from the start. Before -he scored he was twice beaten by Richardson and was caught in two minds by Macartney. Stevens, when 24. was badly missed by Wu-odfull at short leg off Richardson. and again when 34 he drove Macadtnev hard into Ryder’s hands and was dropped. Stevens pleased the crowd by hitting out. but hei lacked thestyle of his colleagues. . Richardson and Macartney were difficult to cl ay, and found many -spots on the worn pitch. Stevens, despite his long stay, was frequently beaten. After passing 50 he was freer, and with Chapman scored frequently from Gregory. Collins made his first appearance as a liowler. He kept a good length and gave a deceptive variety of balls. The pitch was wearing bad’y,. and induced caution on the part of the batsmen. Stevens, shortly after tea. made a short return to Richardson.' His scoro included three sixes and one four, and took three hours.' 11 is partnership with Cl l <M >i iuvn av as tJ l© on 1 y bri glit spot of the innings, and produced 101 runs. Chapman played stylishly and scored four fours. He was taken by Ryder in the 1-ong field. Richardson missed an easy return from Asti 11 before he had S( d (].. A hot drive off Collins struck Rvder (at silly point) on the knee. He continued to play, hut retired to deep point. Falcon. a-ter a quiet- stay, knocked eight off Collins in one over. A succession of maidens followed, and the crowd ironically cheered every stroke. Three, runs scored in ten overs were vociferously applauded. The Mtaii-vleibone innings lasted 255 minutes. Richardson bowled almost throughout. He kept an excellent length and had the batsmen guessing with the exception of Hendren and Chapman. The batsmen were unenterpriiising and smart ground fielding and throwing in saved 'many runs. -The Australians went (in five, minutes from time and faced Falcon and Stev-
eiis. The latter commenced with three no balls. ... The scores were: MARYLEGBOINE. ... First Innings. HAS SCARLET FEVER* LONDON, May 16, Oil© of the Australian cricketers has been taken to hospital suffering from scarlet fewer. His condition is not serious, but he is unlikely to play for six or seven weeks. , M.C.C. MATCH. NOTES ON THE TEAM. The M.C.C. team on paper looked _a pretty strong combination, and it is specially interesting because of the fact that Carr, the selected English captain, is included, together with several others who are considered likely members of the test team. The team included three from Middlesex (Stevens, Hendren and Haig), and the rest are from Somerset (Macßryan), Kent (Chapman), Hampshire (Kennedy), Worcester (M. Foster), Leicester' (A still). Norfolk (Falcon), Notts (Carr), and one belonging to Marylebone. The Englishmen opened and, considering the state of the wicket, did fairly well. Considerable interest to New Zealanders will be the fact that Chapman, who was out with Maelaren’s team and proved himself so popular here, .made’ a. fine score of 51 on the bad wicket, and with Stevens made the I best stand ? of the innings. Hendren also batted well. It- is interesting also to note that the wickets were secured mainly by Richardson nod Collins. The former was exoected by many good judges in Australia to rlo well on English - wickets', mid this gives indications of heaving out that opinion. His play,' and especially his bowling. will be watched with much interest. The ground fielding of the .Australians is reported as being very good, but there were several easy chances of catching missed by men who are generally regarded as 'absolute! v certain to hold any reasonable catch. The progress of the match will be followed with much interest, for M.C.C. teams chosen are always strong, and this team contains a. number of the leading English cricketers.
