AMONG THE HORSES.

PERFORMANCES AND PROSPECTS. (By “Maecenas.”) So far, no rider has been engaged for Euphonium for his Connolly Handicap engagement. Koauau has finished well in his recent races, and should have more than an outside chance in some of the moio important hurdle races to come. There is every chance of Ngata being a runner in the Great Northern Hurdles, and, despite his load of 11.12, he can be relied on to run well. A number of horses that raced at Egniont this week can be relied on to show improved form from now on, v Eden Hall confirmed the good. Opinion formed of him by carrying 9.2 and winning in heavy going on Thursday. In the past the stock of Bisogne have shown brilliancy on dry tracks, but the good form on the heavy Hawera track of Vaward, Benzora, Sovcua and Monaghan proves their worth in all forms of ground. The present owners of Rational arc tiring of Absurd’s son, and he will probably be turned out for a lengthy spell unless disposed of. Subjection was severely tested on Thursday, when he was taken to the front from barrier rise, but he fought out every inch of the journey to run a close second.

After a few furlongs had been covered in the Hack Steeplechase, the saddle on Gilgai started to work back, and it was no surprise to find the rider unable to draw weight on returning to scale.

Racing witnessed in Hawera this week should be of value to those patronising the Wanganui meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. The connections of old Sir Fanciful were hopeful that a good jumping race Would fall to him this season, but the gelding ricked a shoulder in a simple manner, when working on the Egmont track on Wednesday last. Kilcoit was not very prominent in the early stages of the Flying Handicap on Thursday, but over the last half furlong she literally flew past her opponents. As this mare is capable of running a middle distance, she should run well in the Connolly Handicap on Thursday next.

Eerie will be ridden in her Wanganui engagements b t y H. Burt. The daughter of Nassau has not had a race over fences since last August, but is such a clever jumper that she will not suffer thereby.

Prior to racing at Egmont on Thursday, Many colours had not done well since leaving home, but after his race he settled down and can be depended on to do better iri future engagements. Usually a fine bold jumper, Puwhero gave a very indifferent display in the Egmont Steeplechase, ami it was not surprising to And the gelding fall clumsily at a .simple brush fence near the lawn.

The jumping 1 of Charlatan on Thursday left much to be desired, and he appears still to lack confidence, a weakness he showed after getting a heavy lull at Timaru some time ago.

Degage will be a runner in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui on Thursday, and will have the services of R. Reed in the event, a big advantage in these davs of moderate riders.

Dubious has done little or no track work since winning on the opening day of the recent Manawatu meeting. While Dubious may win in his turn, he is hardly good enough to win a “Northern.’ ’

The Egmont Pacing Ghib intends making alterations to some of the course buildings in the near future, included in which will be the moving back by some distance and also the raising of the judge’s box, which at present is too close to the race track, and is also much lower than desirable.

In winning so easily at his first, attempt over country, Nuknmai registered a first-class performance. Those who have witnessed this gelding’s cleverness over batten hurdles were quite prepared to find him making light of the big .jumps, and present, indications point to Nukumni taking a very high place as a steeplechaser, as he has pace and stays and jumps well, and is a great weight carrier, qualifications that go to make a ehampipn over jumps.
