AWATUNA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FARMERS’ UNION. The amiuar meeting; of the Awatuna Te Iviri branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Te Kiri Hall on Saturday evening, there being 20 members present. Mr H. Davison (president) occupied the chair and, before proceeding with the evening’s business. moved a vote of sympathy with Mr M. W. Barker in his illness, and expressed a sincere wish that he would speedily be restored to full health. The annual report and balance-sheet disclosed a very healthy state of affairs, unci . sound-eel a not-e of pleasure at the marked progress 1 made by the branch during the past year. All meetings (numbering 12) had been well attended by members, and much keen interest taken. During the year, addresses given by Messrs Ford and W. Lyndon had been highly appreciated, and had aroused much valuable discussion. During the year halls had been held in both Awatuna and Te Kiri, in each instance proving' highly successful. The president and secretary had visited the schools in the branch’s district and, after giving short addresses to the scholars on calfrearing competitions andi root crop growing, presented the prizes won by the children at the various schools for the former competition. During the year the branch had held its first cattle show, and this .also was a pleasing success, ns 46 cattle were entei-ed and £6 2s collected in fees. The bal-ance-sheet revealed the pleasing fact +hat, after deducting heavy expenses for new ventures, there was a credit balance of £lO 14s Id. Mr H. Korte, Mrs Korte and Miss Korte were accorded a hearty vote of thanks, the former for the free use of his paddock and for providing posts, timber, etc., for the cattle show, and the two ladies for so generously entertaining the committee during the various working days. A vote of thanks was also accorded Messrs Street, Barker. Hughes and Corbett for carting hurdles from Otalceho, and the Otakeho branch was heartily thanked for the use of same. The report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Mr Korte, seconded by Mr Templeton. Mr Corbett moved, and Mr Agnew seconded, that Mr Street he voted the sum of £2 2s for his heavy year’s work os' secretary. Both mover and seconder sooke of the heavy duties falling to the holder of that post. Although he would much prefer to he relieved of the position of president. Mr H. Davison, at the unanimous request of the meeting, consented to be re-elected, and Mr H. L. Street accepted the secretary shin. The chosen executive of the branch is: Messrs -I- Phillips, L. Corbett, S. Agnew. and H. Korte. Mr M. Barker was re-elected delegate to the provincial executive, all the members of which were heartily thanked for their sendees during the past year. The delegates selected to represent the branch at the annual conference were Messrs A. E. Collins and H. Davison, and they were authorised 1 to move the following remit at that conference :

“That' th© Kailway Department he asked to carry agricultural lime over the Dominion’s railways free of charge.” Tt was also decided that the ordinary meeting of the branch be held the fir=t Saturday in each month. The whole meeting was keenly enthusiastic. and members were eager to take up the chosen oosts of service for the coming year. The success of the meeting should be reflected in the operations of the coming session. Tt was decided to co-operate with Auroa in entertaining Mr R. Dunn, the late president of the provincial executive.

A cull cow drive was discussed, and 't was decided to make arrangements to work in with Auroa for the next drive. The branch here intends to hold the flrst- Farmers’ Union hall some time in ,T”ne. and this should he one of the year’s events locally. PERSONAL. Residents of the district will he nleased to hear that Mr M. Barker Is recovering .from his recent operation. and has now returned home: also that Mr -T. Flavin, manager of the factory, has so far recovered froni his recent illness ns to he able to resume control of the factory.
