A Press Association message from Sydney announces the death of Captain W. De Lille Cromarty, formerly in the Union Company’s service. He was 87 years of age. The Bight Rev. Monsignor Power will -leave Hawerta to-morrow to take part in the celebration of the jubilee of the Taranaki Hibernian 'Society at New Plymouth on Sunday. Mr T. H. Tuohy, who has been appointed chief goods clerk at the Hal wera railtvay station, in place of Mr A. Henderson, arrived in Hawera from Taumarunui yesterday. Mr Tuohy will commence his new' duties at the beginning of next week. It is -vyi-th regret that we record the death-, of the Rev. Sister Raphael, who died on Tuesday at the Wanganui Convent after a long illness. The late sister was a, sister of Mr. J. Hodgson, of Manaia, and it is but a. few weeks since the death of another member of the family, the Rev.' Sister Zeta. Both of -the deceased were dearly l beloved by their school -children, and were -popular among all who knew them. The sympathy of his many friends, will be extended to Mr. Hodgs-on in his bereavement. —Own Correspondent.
A pleasant function took place yesterday afternoon when the Mayoress, Mrs. E. A. Paeey, entertained members of the Women’s National Reserve, there being nearly 30 members present. An enjoyable afternoon dur_ ing which a number of musical and elocutionary items were given, -was spent. Among- the guests was Mrslv Smith, of Sydney, a sister of Mrs. J Pacey’s, who is at present on a visit to New Zealand Songs w r ere given by Misses O. Tait and O. Grindrod and elocutionary items by Miss J. Tonks.
A pleasant function, at which a.number oil friends gathered at the Catholic Assembly Hall, to -bid- farewell to Mrs. E. Gallagher, who -had been a member of St-. Joseph's congregation fo-r 48 years, -and her daughter Mrs R. C. Ferguson, took place last evening. The Right -Rev. Monsignor Power presided. Gifts on behalf of the parishioners were made to the guests, who will leave Hiawera- shortly on a visit to Australia prior to taking u-p t-heir residence in Wellington, by Mr. Bartlett Mrs. -Gallagher -being presented with an attache case and -a brooch, Mrs. Ferguson receiving a suitcase. The Monsignor said that during his 32 years’ residence ;in Taranaki there had been no work for the parish in which Mrs. Gallagher -had not taken a leading part, and that she had herself ’been a most generous subscriber -to every good W’Ork. Mr. B. McCarthy -and Mr. Bartlett, endorsing the Monsignor’s eulogy, were able to -speak of Mrs. Gallagher’s work during the- years before his arrival in, the district. During the evening a number of musical items were given as follows : Pita-no solo, Miss- Rleil.ly; violin solo, Mr. P. Keegan; songs. Mesdames Ferguson, Goodson, Messrs T, Gormley, and Mee; vocal duets, Mr. and Mrs. Mee.
