The Grand Jury found no bill aga-iiusi John Nelson Reynolds, who wß® charged with others of causing claaiiiage to a motor car with intent to defraud. John Al.u.rray Allison, for breaking and entering, with intent to commit a crime and for assault, was given two years’ probation. Arthur Normlan Shades for an unnatural offence at New Plymouth, was sentenced to iseven years’ imprisonment. A true bill was returned against Ronald George Frankham, charged with manslaughter arising out of a motor accident. The Grand Jury last session returned no Bill and accused was re-indieted by the Attorney-Gener-al under Section 407 of the Crimes Act. On receiving the last findings of the Grand Jury, Mr Justice Stringer remarked that Auckland, with 34 persons on its criminal list, compared unfavourably with Wellington, which had three for the present sessions, and Dunedin which had five. WITHOUT INTENT. FORGERY OF A CHEQUE. WELLINGTON, May 4. In order to facilitate a small business deal which he was negotiating and to gain time for the consideration of details Trevor James Phillips, a young man. forged a. cheque for £6O in the names of two trustees of a church ball account of which he was secretary. The deal fell through and the offence was discovered, the police being called in. To-day Phillips stood his trial for forgery and uttering. It was stated that the. cheque was not cashed. Phillips bad given it more- to secure time than to obtain cash and had had no intention to use the cheque. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of forgery, and on the charge of uttering a verdict of guilty without intent to defraud. Leniency was recommended. The prisoner was admitted to probation for a period not yet fixed.
