SWIMMING.
The season has finished for Taranaki, and must be acknowledged to have been a very good one all round, despite the unfavourable conditions during the middle portion. The end of the season has been quite the best for all who take an interest in this fine sport.
ONE GIRL TO ANOTHER. Miss Claire Couldwell, the Sydney girl who has toppled so many records this season, has received (says the Referee) the following letter from Miss Ena Stockley, of Auckland, the Australasian sprint champion: "Since we returned to Auckland from Sydney we are just dying to extend our warmest congratulations to you —our recent redoubtable opponent. Your quarter-mile victory of New Soutn Wales was wonderful, and we hope yon will soon cut down the few seconds that stand between you and Fanny Durack’s record. When you go that fast it mean? only another little spurt, and, crash goes the world’s record. Of course, you know that Gwitha Shand’s best time and New Zealand record is Gmin. Ssec., and it was on that time and her record (N.Z.) of 2.47 for 220 yards that she went to Honolulu and the Olympic Games, so your chances are very rosy, aren’t they? Don’t overdo it, Claire, this season. I understand champions of all countries are being invited ro compete in Honolulu at the annual swimming gala there. May our ambitions materialise! You should certainly remember the 1925-6 swimming season. It has been one long series of honours for you, and it is our earnest hope that they continue. Again, let us congratulate you and wish you further success.”
