THE RACING DESCRIBED. (Special to Star). HASTINGS, April 30. The Hawke’s Bay meeting was opened to-day in hot and windy weather on a very dusty track. The racing was interesting, but the Hawke’s Bay Stakes was spoilt by the withdrawal of Reremoana, which is in reserve for the Ormond Gold Cup. Little River, caught in galloping mood, gave nothing else a look in in the Mangatarata Hurdles. Toa Taua took second place to him a mile from home, but Little River, despite" a faulty .jump two fences from home, won easily by six lengths from Toa Taua. Landbird, which looked very well, was finishing on third, just ahead of Crown Coin and Suspicion. Little River and Suspicion were practically evenly backed favourites. My Hobby was favourite for the Longlands AVelter, but after being up with, the leaders all the way, he was beaten home bv both Hillation and Strongholt. The order to the turn was Strongholt. which had shot out from the ruck half a mile from home, Othon, My Hobbv, Gurnion and Hillation. Hillation stayed on to beat Strongholt by half a length, with My Hobby a length away third. Othon, Gurnion and Wairipo were next. Polyastra, which carried 10.10 and a gentleman rider against the 7.7 of his handicap, ran very well for six furlongs. Magna Charta was backed in the Nurserv Handicap as if tho race was all over, with Rascal the only other which was supported. Magna Charta, Inner Harbour and Rascal were the first to sort themselves out, and led Silver Tray, Beth and Hymgreat to the turn. Magna Charta and Rascal were beaten a furlong from home, but Inner Harbour hold oft' the light-weights, Hymgreat and Silver Tray. Heads divided tho trio. Rascal was fourth and Beth and Magna Charta next. Glentruin was opposed only by Peneus and Decoy Bird in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, and after allowing Peneus to lead her to the turn, she came on to win in a canter by half a length from Peneus, with Decoy Bird six lengths away, as close as he ever got to the, other pair. Glentruin was a very hot favourite: Star Stranger, Piutliair and Kilfairc were the favourites for the Hawke’s Bay Uup. Killoeh, after being ieft, was in front at the end of two furlongs and increased th’c lead down the back from Piutliair, Gaze, Kilfairc, Star Stranger, Novar and Phoenix Park. Opa made a rapid run to the turn, and Star Stranger, after being sent back at tho half mile, was again up with the leaders, Killoeh, Opa, Kilfairc and Novar. At the straight entrance Star Stranger and Opa came away to fight out the finish over the Just 100 yards, the judge giving a dead lieat. Gaze was six lengths a wav third and Kilfairc, Novar and Phoenix Park next. Star Stranger's performance was first class. Plain Sailing, AGvo, Imitation and Minstrel Boy were the favourites for the Poukawa Handicap. Imitation, Break o’ Day, Plain Sailing and Minstrel Boy led*Vivo and Cohesion and a bunched field to tho turn, from which point Imitation came on to win easily by three-quarters of a. length from Break o’ Day, which defeated Minstrel Boy by half a length. Plain Sailing was a good fourth and Vivo and Cohesion next. Perle De Leon, although very sore and practically last half a mile from home in the Autumn Handies p. cut down the early leaders in company with Road Hog in the straight and’ beat him home by half a length. Newbury King was two lengths away third and Gauntlet and Good Sportnext. Good Sport, Olympic, Newbury King and Gauntlet were the leaders nearly all the way.
Royal Damon, Automne, and Rather O ’Plvnn wove tlie favourites in the Plying- Handicap. Father O’Flynn anti Royal Damon led Standard, Automne, Huikai and Papaponga to the turn, but once in line for home, Automne went up to challenge Father O’Flynn, which, under pressure, stayed on to beat Automne by a head, -with Royal Damon two lengths away third. Huikai and Standard were next.

(By “Maecenas.”) As New Zealand owners bought freely at the recent bloodstock sales in Sydney, there will be an abundance of Australian-bred horses racing next, season. '• According to a leading Australian' sporting writer, the New Zealand : owned and bred Boyal Tea ranks next to Bampion amongst the youngsters that raced in Australia. Owner-trainer J. McCpmbe, who sold his team of horses a couple of months ago, was a good buyer at the recent sale of youngsters in Sydney. MeCombe recently arrived back in the Dominion with six young horses.
It is stated that Llewellyn will be a runner in the AVanganui Steeplechase. This gelding gave great promise last season, his performances suggesting his showing up well in this year’s most important cross-country races. Of the tyros who may be seen competing - in the chief steeplechases this year, Peter Maxwell’s prospects look as "bright as most- This gelding lias pace, stays well, and, in liis first* two races over “country” (at Paeroa) succeeded in riming a first and a second, following those performances up with another close second at Ellerslie.
Although there were steeplechases at the South Canterbury and Waikato meetings, and there is also a hack, steeplechase to be decided at the Waverley meeting- next week, the coming meeting will virtually open the cross-country* season. • ; :
At the conclusion of racing at Hastings to-day, and the Waikato meeting on Monday, the principal fiat racing of 1925-26 will conclude, and, taking everything into consideration, the season has been a most successful one from every point of view.
One of the latest horses to be place' 1 , on the schooling list is the Australianbred Alfort, which of late has turned very* mulish at the barrier. As Alfort is now nominated for hurdle races, lie may finish his career in that branch of the sport. Thus far the Australian-bred Nippy has not shown the form expected of her by her connections,' but at times she lias shown pace that suggests her paying expenses. Nippy* is engaged at the AVaikato meeting, where the roomy course should suit her.
Possibly the most improved competitor over steeplechase courses last season was Birkenella, as, in his early efforts, he simply scrambled over his jumps, but after a little racing handled the Trentlinm and difficult Riccarton courses remarkably well,' better, in fact, than 91) per cent, of the horses that raced there. Trainer W. Garrett has Birkenella well forward in view of his Great Northern engagements, but the Ellerslie country does not suit this gelding, and he can be depended on to (1,0 better at Trentham t and Jfcrccarton. A couple of seasons ag6 'Rord Star, from R. Hannon’s stable, showed exceptionally good form on soft tracks, but subsequently broke, down. This gelding has been racing again during the last, couple of months and appears to be improving with every race, and, as he is now at the bottom of the handicaps again, he may be worth ticking off as one likely to'run well at the coming meeting at Ellerslie.
The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club can indeed count itself lucky that it should be honoured with such a classy field for the Ormond Gold Cup to-day. Rich clubs like the Victorian Racing Club or the, Australian Jockey Club would pay a fortune for such a contest. While the track at Hastings is'reasonably good, it is a thousand pities that such a contest is not being decided at I-iccarton or Trentliam, where the luck of running would not play such a prominent part.
VAVEHLEY RACES,

Particulars for brain arrangements, etc., for the Wa.verley races on Wednesday next' are advertised in this issue.
