RAILWAY LINE BLOCKED
SLIP ON THE RIMUTAKA
(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CARTER,TON. May 1.
A heavy rainstorm broke over Featherston last night, the deluge falling up till 0 o’clock to-day and registering 1.38 inches. What was described by railwaymen as the most serious slip that had ever occurred on the permanent way was reported from the Summit. An avalanche of soil, trees, rubbish and rocks came down the hill with a great rumble and completely blocked the mouth of the long tunnel with thousands of tons of debris. Gangs have been out on, but many hours of continuous labour must elapse before a clearance can be made. Meanwhile railway passengers -are booked in the Wairarapa t-o or from Cross Creek only. No mails are running, but endeavours are being made to arrange for service cars to carry letter mails over the hill road, which so far is reported clear.
