MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY AT
ELTHAM
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYS
EFFORT
The first annual chrysanthemum show conducted by the Eltham Horticultural and Produce Society was held in the Town Hall yesterday, and was a distinct success. The entries were very large, and the quality or the blooms excellent, especially in the chrysanthemum section, which, occnpyintj the central set of staging, provided a. splendid display. • The attendance during the afternoon and evening sessions was large, and many were the enthusiastic remarks made hv visitors regarding the show. In addition to the chrysanthemum section, there were also classes for cut flowers, farm and garden produce and decorative section. The arrangement of exhibits was very good and the judge 'of the chrysanthemum section congratulated the committee on its method of stagThe energetic secretary, Mr F. R. The opening ceremony Was perlormed bv the Mayor (Mr I. J. Bridget-) in tiu early part of the afternoon. There was a large attendance of visitors. After opening, Sir Waiter Carncross r resented the chrysanthemum cup and tne decorative section points prize—a silver cup. The Rev. W. IV. Avery saici, in introducing the Mayor, that although this was the first occasion on which the society had made a feature ot chrysanthemums, lie 1 thought those present would agree that the display was very creditable. He tendereU his thanks to the exhiibtors, judges and stewards. The Mayor said ;it was a p’easure to open tiie first chrysanthemum show held in Eltham, especially in view of the success of the function. He said he was sure that flower shows were an incentive to growers to exceed their previous efforts, and he congratulated tiie exhibitors on the magnificence 01 the blooms displayed. The cultivation of flowers was, in Ids opinion, a helpful, elevating and productive occupation, and the growing of vegetables was certainly useful. While the number of the exhibits couLd yet show an improvement, he felt that the duff), ay was very creditable. He appreciated the invitation to open the show, and congratulated the growers present and the committee for the energy shown and trusted that the show would develop. Sir Walter Carncross then present;cl the silver cup donated by Mr M. McGarry for the best collection of chrysanthemums to Mr J. IV. Mandeno, of IVanganui, and the cui> presented byMr C. Rowe for most points in the decorative section to Mrs T. Fever. 'OPINIONS OF THE JUDGES.
The judges, interviewed at the con elusion of the judging, expressed themselves as delighted with the exhibits and with the general arrangement. Mr Victor Davies, of New Plymouth, judge of the chrysanthemum sections, said that the quality of the blooms was of exceptional merit, and for cleanness of appearance they were the flnest he had seen in Taranaki during the season. He drew special to the collection, exhibited by 7 Mr J. W. Mandeno, of Wanganui, that had .secured the McGarry Cup, and the champion bloom. In the novice class, lie selected a bloom, “William Turner,” exhibited by Mir T. ,S. Stanners, as being very good, and remarked that this was runner-up for the champion bloom award, and he also referred to a “White’’ shown by Mr F. R. Pepperell. Mil- W. Moss, -of Ngaere, who judged the cut flower section, considered the blooms excel’ent for the time of the year. He said tiiat the season was late, but the exhibits, although not as numerous as would he liked, were quite, good. Mrs H. T. Lovell, of Hawera, judgin the decorative classes, regarded tiie exhibits as being of a very high standard ; but she regretted that more entrifcs had not been received in the classes for decorated mantel-shelves arid tables. Messrs G. V. Tate and E. S. Allen, after judging the farm and garden produce, were most enthusiastic, and declared the whole section as being very creditab’e. Mangolds were a feature, were particularly solid and cut well, and proved to be of fine tecture. Soft turnips were good, and swedes were very healthy and solid for the time of the season —rather early for large roots, and showed fine early growth. Carrots were also good. Gar den exhibits were not as numerous as would have been liked, but the general quality was all that could be desired. Some of the cabbages were excellent, and the peas grown by Mrs Sattler were exceptional, for to produce a poo with ten peas fully grown and :in good condition near the end of April was considered, unusual. •
