HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETINGS.

' NEW SCHOOL COMMITTEES. Further reports are to hand from outlying districts of the annual meetings of householders, held on Monday evening, for the purpose of electing school committees for the year 1926-27. AUEOA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At the housenolders’ annual meeting at Auroa tnere was a. fair attendance, presided over by Mr T. Kilpatrick. the annual report traversed the work of the year, showing that the comrinttee had held la meetings and had carried out numerous improvements to the school surroundings, including the concreting of the entrance to the infant room, the laying out of a playing area for the infants, the completion of the tennis court, the fencing of the school garden, provision of forms for use in the shelter sheds and for outdoor lessons, conversion of an old building for use as a saddlestied, and the provision of new waterilushed latrines. The school gala, by which £4O was raised in May last (this amount being subsidised by the department), together with a canvass of the district by the committee, secured tne wherewithal for these works. 'The halauce-sneet showed a credit balance of £36 odd on February 28, wnen the boohs closed for the annual audit by tfie secretary of the education Foard, but against that were liabilities amounting to £46. These have been met since from the quarterly capitation. During the year the boys, under Mr Brown’s supervision, established a plantation of pines and eucalypti trees in a former waste corner of the ground. The eucalypts were donated uy the Forestry Department, and were given a severe trial to test their suitability td stand our windy climate before being set out in their present quarters. Of 21 varieties, 10 seem to be thriving, four varieties are not so good, while seven are an absolute tailure. The headmaster will be pleased to show over the plantation anyone who is interested in tree growing. During the year Mrs McCarrison (nee Miss Farquhar) severed her connection with the school, her place on the staff being filled by Mrs Cottrell. Miss Flavin was transferred to Ivapuni at the beginning of the year, her place being filled by her sister and Mr C. J. O’Dea. Considerable interest in the school has been shown by the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, which donated £5 to the committee’s funds for ground beautifying and also provided prize money for the various root-growing and cow-judging competitions held during the year. In conclusion, the committee placed on record its thanks to the teachers for the willing way in which they have assisted the committee. The following were elected to the committee for the coming year: Messrs T. Kilpatrick, J. C. Duff, M. Sheerin, A. C. Langlands, C. Cameron, G-. Kirk and D. Barlow. No ballot was necessary, the exact number of nominations being received. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, Mr T. Kilpatrick was appointed to the chair, and Mr J. C. Duff takes the secretarial duties. A very hearty vote of thanks: was passed to the outgoing committee, this latter being carried by acclamation. Complimentary reference was also made by the chairman to the improved appearance of the ground since the present headmaster took charge of the school. MAKAKA. Four .householders were present at the Makiaka meeting—Messrs H. C. Duckett, B. W. Johns, W. IT. Walker and M. Wills —but these declined to nominate themselves as a committee. RAHOTTJ. Mr. W. H. Butler presided over an attendance of six householders at Rahotu. The committee elected was : Messrs W. H. Butler (chairman), K. Andrew’s, T. Farquhar, IT. Dawson, and V. S. Tyrell (secretary). MANGAHUME. Alt Mangahuiine, Mr. IT. N. MeLellan presided over an ’attendance 1 of eight, and the following .committee was elected: Messrs H. N. MeLellan (chairman), J. M. Hickey, J. G. Mach ray, R.. J. Morris, and G. M. Scott (secretary). OHANGAI. Nine householders were present at Ohamgai, Mr. W. J. Savage presiding. The members of the new committee are: Messrs P. Shea Ivan (chairman), H. Philpotlt, W. G. Trilford, W. J. Savage and J. Kerrisk (.secretary). WHAKAMARA. The following committee was elected at WhakanniVa : Messrs A. J. Davies (chairman and secretary), J. Dobson, W. Hamilton, H. Scott, a.nd R. Caldwell. EIVERLEA. At the Riverlea meeting there was a very poor attendance. Mr. B. L. Webby, chairman of the retiring committee, was voted, to tire olrair. In presenting the annual report, the chairman .congratulated the houselroidens on the successful year passed, particularly considering the time lost at the beginning of the year owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic, winch had meant a. loss of three months in tuition. During the year the school had lost tire services of Mr. A. J£. Mills, who had resigned to accept an appointment at Westo wn. 3)!iss _ M. I. Moreeraft had. been, appointed to the position of head teacher in Mr. Mill’s place and the chairman desired to extend to her a hearty welcome and to wish her every success in Rliverlea. He also desired to express sincere sympathy with the assistant teacher, Miise Brooker, who was absent on siek leave. Her position was at present .being filled by Miss Leech, who was a. most capable .substitute, and Riverlea could congratulate itself on having two silch teachers as Miss Mo re craft and Miss Leech in charge. New front gates were to be erected land also new turnstiles, one of which had already been supplied. The committee had decided to plant an acre of the ground which has been leased with the most suitable varieties of timber and firewood trees, and Mr. Mills had reared plants for this purpose. Two new porches were to be added to the school at a. cost of £35, of which the. Board was finding £l7 lOs a,nd the committee and department £8 15s each. It had also been decided to do .away with the present unsatisfactory type of outhouses, and for this purpose the district had. been canvassed for fund and a. most generous response met with. The c-ost of the proposed new flush system outhouses

was estimated by the Board at £l2O. of which the committee had to find a certain proportion. Mr. Webiby hoped the new committee would make this its .most urgent work in the new year. In the matter of passes, he would like bo mention that six pupils had received their proficiency certificates. Another work done during the year had been the planting ol trees on the river bank, and the fencing of same. The balance-sheet, showing receipts £B3 2s Id and expenditure £72 13s Id, leaving a credit balance of £lO 3s, together with the report, was adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Hook. The election of the new committee resulted in Messrs B. L. Webby, J. Stabiles, K. Rathe, 11. Hook, and M. F. Youllaixe being chosen. Ait a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr. Webby was re-elected as chairman and Mr. Voullaire was elected as secretary. It was also resolved to meet on the first' Friday in each month at 7.30 p.m.

TE KIRI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) About 20 householders were present Messrs .Collins, McKinnon, Hughes, Beer, anil Gilshnan were elected as the new committee., which, at a later meeting, elected Mr. Collins chairman and Mr. Beer secretary. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring chairman (Mr. Ooxhead.) ARARATA. i Seven householders attended at Aruraba, Mr. A. G. Lnrconn presiding. The new committee is composed of the following gentlemen : Messrb A. G. Larcom (chairman). Ei. Lee, J. Grant, C. F. Marsh, and.P. Lunberg (secretary) [Owing to an erorr in classification yesterday, this committee appeared under the Fraser Road heading.] FRASER ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At Fraser Road sufficient household ers attended to do the necessary business. Satisfaction was expressed all round, and the report anti balancell eet were .adopted as read. The new committ-ee shows only one change, Mr. J. R,. Moller being! elected to the chair. Other members, all of last year’s committee, were elected as fallow: Messrs L. A. Jennings, A. L Campbell, Rl. The following committee was elected: Messrs E. Caiv r e (chairman), S. Mann, H. Sh.rimpton, J. H. Want, and J. T. Thomas (secretary). PUKENGAHU. The new committee at Pukengahu is: Mr J. O’Neill (chairman), Mrs Harper, Messrs Harper, T. M. Old, and B. T. Booker. RAWHITIROA. For the ensuing year the Rawhitiroa school will be controlled by the following committee: Messrs J. Cocker (chairman), D. May, I'. Silver, W. Bootten and G. Major. MANGAMINGI. The new committee at Maugamingi is as follows: Messrs L. E. Jackson (chairman), P. It. Brown, F. Martin, G. Kirk and L. Barnard. / NGAERE. Ngaere householders elected the fol--1 owing to serve on the committee: Messrs T. E. Coleman (chairman), H. Taylor, E. Bocock, W. Piper and A. D. Walker (secretary). MATA. The meeting at Mata lapsed for want of a quorum. ROTOKARE. The new committee at ltotokare is made up as follows: Messrs J. Gascoigne (chairman), J. Daley, J. Thompson, G. Sharp and E. Case (secretary). PI KAMA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A« usual, the meeting at Pi.hamiai was poorly .attended. Mr. P. S. Riley presided. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £24 13s 3d. The chairman gave a brief outline of the work clone during the year, the chief activity being the installation of a proper sanitary system. . The he'a»lni;avSiteT reported that owing, to the increased attendance the school had gone up a grade and that an extra assistant had been appointed. He also stated that six pupils bad gained proficiency certificates .and two competency certificates, and that the school had for the third time in succession won the Egniout County Sports Association Cup. He thanked the staff and the committee for their hearty cooperation during, the year. The following committee was elected for the ensuing year : Messrs P. ,S. Riiiev. J. Pettigrew, J. D. Cbnaglen, A. Wiiloook, and B. Duffy. At the committee meeting held subseqfiently, Mr. P. S. Bliley was reeledtedf chairmain and Mr. J. Pettigrew secretary.
