An important conference between the Swarajists, who have withdrawn from the legislatures on the ground of the unsatisfactory nature of the Government’is rc.spou.se to the demand for further advance to the Swarj, and the Re.spon.sibists, who advocate entering the legislatures in order to advance to the attainment of Swarj. met at the i liistamce of Gandhi in an endeavour to arrive at a. common formula upon which to work. An agreement was reached, which the national congress executive will be aisked to ratify, providing that if the ministers in the provinces were given the requisite power, responsibility and initiative, the, parties adhering to the agreement will work for the Swarj through the legislatures, and otherwise they will refuse to accept office and will reject supply. As a result of a persistent refusal of ministers’ salaries ibv the Swarajist majority in the Central Provinces, the Council of India, has now, with the sanction of the Secretary of State, suspended, the D'yanchical administration till the end of January, 1927. when fresh elections will bring a new council into being.—Reuter.
