RAVAGES OF THE BORER.
ANOTHER VARIETY FOUND. The ravages of iiio borer and the information 'that another and unknown species lha-d been found in a ri.mu door pane ait Maisterton were referred to by Mr. F. W. Tempile at a meeting of the Mn si teuton Chamber of Commerce last week. Mr. Temple stated (that the ravages of (the borer were providing a staggering problem. In 75 per cent, of wooden houses the borer had made its appearance, and the time had come when tbj*tking people believed that something should be done to obliterate it. For many years the borer had made headway in the Dominion, and it would continue to make progress until the auth oritie.s tackled the problem properly. Tlhe only way he could see of ■siioeessfnly dealing with the problem was to destroy the source from whence the borer came—its birthplace in the timber yards. Ninety per cent, of the timber yards were nurseries for the borer,.and the Government should have infected timber burned. The speaker produced a live borer in a glass jar. He did not know He name of the borer, but there had been three of these and they had eaten_ away a. rimu panel, leaving only a skin the panel, which was three-eighths of an inch thick and two or three feet long. He suggested that the borer be forwarded to* ■till© OaAvrfcliron for its opinion regarding it. On Mr. Temple’s motion it was resolved. to request the Government to take in hand the question of dealing with the borer and that the matter Jbe also brought under the notice of f the Gawthron Institute.
