STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY ALEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held on Saturday when there were present Crs. T. RAnderson (chairman), W. H. Were, J. Jacobson, Al. Davis, S. Pitt, S. Parker, J. O’Neill, and J. T. Belcher. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The engineer (Air. J. W. Spence) reported inter alia: South Riding.—Three and a half miles of the Bird. Road have received a coat of tar, the water-tables have been cleaned out, and the balance of the road has been elav blinded. The Skinner, Wingrove, and Sole Roads have been clay blinded, the watertables cleaned out. The portions of the Waihapa and Mangrove Roads, between the Waihapa factory and the Pukengahu Road have been coated with road oil and sand.
West Riding.—The greater part of the .month has been occupied in the formation of side tracks on _ the Opunake Road. These portions will be coated with shingle as soon as a roller is available. A start was made with the crushing of the bouldevs at Cardiff, but. unfortunately, the work has been help up on account of the sharft in the crusher breaking. The replacing of same has taken a considerable time, the shaft forwarded from Auckland being for a larger crusher. The machine is now being put together, a pel a, start should he made next week. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
The inspector (Air. H. J. Spearman) reported that 758 renewals of drivers' licenses had been issued, and applications were still coming*'in freely. Last year a total of 808 licenses were issued. Hog registrations were now completed, with the exception of a few stragglers and young dogs. To date, 1153 collars had been issued. Alore sporting dogs and house dogs had been in evidence this year, including quite a number of greyhounds. The report was received. GENERAL.
Justin F. McCarthy, of Mahoe, wrote complaining of the rough state of that portion of the Upper Palmer Read fronting his farm, and asked that it be attended to. —Referred to riding members. The request of Mr. T. S. Gedge, of Mahoe, for permission to erect a fence close fo the metal near the Atangatoki bridge, on the Stratford-Opunake Road to assist him to clear weeds, was left to riding'members with power to act. E. -T. Kilsby, secretary of the Toko branch of the', Farmers’ Union, wrote drawing the council’s attention to the dangerous nature of tar-sealed roads for horse traffic, and requested that steps be taken to place the foot of Sangster’s hill and the portion from the top of Sangster’s bill to Mr. Sextus’ gate in a reasonably safe condition. The cutting between Skinner Road and Air. H. Johnston’s property was also dangerous. It was decided,to put in hand the work of forming * side tracks on the nlaces indicated when opportunity permits.
