HOW THEY lUN. (Notes bv “Maecenas.’’) WELLINGTON, April 17. Meal climatic conditions favoured the Wellington Racing Club for the concluding day of its autumn meeting, which took ’place before .a very large attendance. Although the Gold Clip contest was run at a slow pace over the early stages, it provided plenty of excitement, many thinking that, under such conditions. Gold Light would hold .Rapine off, but the gelding ran past her in an easy manner. Gold Light appeared to be lame after the race. The Second High-weight Handicap produced a good betting race, Pantagruel (£2322) being actual favourite, but there was plenty of money for Sotitana (£1.950), Ardfinnan (£1844), and Asleep (£181.4). From an excellent start, Asleep began best and led Eonmark and Lady Gay out of the straight. Racing; up the back, Asleep still led from Miatu, Sottana and Pantagruel. * Placing to the straight. Asleep and Matu were just in front of Lady Gay and Pantagrueil, but. once in the straight' Pantagruel got- to the front, but L. Morris had to show his best oji him to stall off a fine run by Ardfinnan. Sottana was a poor third. Then came Asleep and Matu. Of .seventeen runners for the Hutt Handicap, leather o’Flynn (£1880) was a hig favourite from Siaosi (£1398). Tommy Dodd (£1340), and Za ragoza (£FI(>0). When the tapes rose, Father O’F'lynn and Fool’p. Paradise begun best and, over the first lunloiig, led Tiega, The Thorn. Archecn. and De.gage. Ait the half mile post, Fool’s Paradise was, just in front of r l’he Thorn, A.rcheen, and Father O’Flynii. Racing into the straight, ' The Thorn was leading Fool’s Paradise, Archecn, Tiega, and Father o’Flynn. At the distance post. Pool’® Paradise looked like winning, hut Tommy Dodd came very last and won easily from Fool’s Paradise, with The Thorn half iai length further hack, just in front of the fastfinishing Tresliam. Others to run good races were Star Area, Gaze, and Zaragoza. A small but very classical! field went to the post for the Trenthani Gold Cup. Bettors made Rapine (£6672) favourite, but Gold Li lit £4223) had a big following:, with Count Cavmir third favourite. When the field was despatched, a slow pace was set by Gold Light, who w : as followed by Rlapine, Mask, and Count Oavonr. There was no change in the -positions till a mile had been "covered. Here the order wa.s Gold Light two lengths in front of Rapine, with Count Oavonr a similar distance a wav in third place. Then, followed Mask and Income. At the half-mile post the pace wa.s improved through Rapine closing on Gold Light, who was about half a length in front of Rapine racing into the straight. When in a line for the winning post Reed called on Rapine, and he soon joined Gold Light, who hung on for a couple of chains, but over the last furlong Ra-

pine run away from his opponents, winning by three lengths from Gold l Light, who beat Mask by a similar distance, while Count Oavour just beat Income.

Indian Sage (£3800) was a pronounced favourite for the Muritai Hack Handicap. Perle de Leon (£2620), Anklet (£1634), and Othon (£1578) followed in order of favouritism. The tapes rose to a good start, Sarty being the first to begin. When the field -settled down, Sarty was leading Kihniss and Tannadice, but passing the half-mile post Tannadice took charge from Sarty, Starshell, Kilmiss, and Salamis. Rounding into the straight, Tannadice was' 1 just in front of Starshell, but once in a line- for the winning post Indian Sage and Kilmiss put in great runs and fought out a great battle, which ended in Indian Sage winning .by a head from KilmiSs, while Phantasy was a good third, just in front of Tannadice and De Luxe.

Bettors went solidly for Alysdn (£3350) for the Pacific Handicap, but other runners well supported were Limited (£2636), Tea Bell (£2085), and Seatown (£1930). When the tapes lifted, Limited began best from Bronstell, Alysou, and. Eloquent. Limited led a bundled lot into the straight, where Kiosk immediately challenged and passed Limited, but a. little later Elthein came at Kiosk and the stablemates lbught out a fine finish, Kiosk beating Elthein by a small margin, with Seatown and Hyna'nna close up and Tea Bell fifth.

There was a big pool on the Autumn Handicap, Listening Pbst (£3281) being favourite from Star Stranger (£3134), Baldowa (£2276), and Royal Divorce (£1642). From a good sendoff Phoenix Park was first to become prominent, leading out of the straight from Baldowa, Star Stranger, Hipo, aud Listening Post. Racing into the back stretch the order was Phoenix Park, Baldowa. Listening Post, and Mount Marta. Passing the five-furlong post Phoenix Park was just in front of (Mount Marta, Baldowa, and Rivalry, and racing into the straight Phoenix Park was just in front of after which came Baldowa, Royai Divorce, and Star Stranger, Once in the straight, R. Reed brought Star Stranger through on the inside, and lie won well from Hipo, which also put in a fine rim over the last furlong. Piuthair was a close third, and then came Phoenix Park, Royal Divorce ancl Baldowa.

Polyphemus (£2933) was the prime fancy for the Suburban Handicap, but there was strong support for Civility (£2644) and Motley (£2121,), while Le Choucas and Tukia also had many friends. When positions could be picked up Nadarino was in front from Set Sail, Merrv Jest, Inferno, First Acre, and Kaiti, and these formed the leading division on to the course proper. Over the last furlong Set Sail ran on well to heat Le Choucas, which just heat Merry Jest by inches. Civility was a good fourth. The racing concluded with the Belmont Handicap, and in a big totalisator pool Benzora (£4333), Ballymoy II (£3*008). Dobbin (£2310), ana Minotus (£1689) were the best supported. When the leading positions could be picked up in the long straight Bonideer was leading from Minotus and Berinthia. Coming on to the course proper. Berinthia was just in front of Bonideer and Minotus, with Benzora just in behind them. Over the concluding stages a great race took place, Benzora getting a lucky opening and dashing through to win well from Minotus. which must have beaten the fast finishing Ballymoy II by inches only. Receipt was close up fourth, and the tiring Berinthia fifth.

Gold Mint was omitted from the acceptances in the Maiden Plate at the Waipapakauri meeting, states a Press Association message from Whangarei. Sergeant Murphy, winner of the Grand National in 1923, broke his leg in a West of Scotland steeplechase today and had to be killed, states a London cable message.
