A BUSY PERIOD

The return of business transacted at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court for the quarter ended March 31. 1926, indicates that more civil plaints were entered, and more cases actually tried, than during the corresponding quarter of the previous year, but the amount recovered was slightly below that of the 1925 period. The total criminal offences tried showed a small increase.

Tn the following summary the figures for the corresponding quarter are, for the purpose of comparison, given in parentheses: Out of 260 (224) civil plaints entered, representing £3206 13s lid (£2866 17s 3d), 144 (128), for amounts totalling £2015 16s (id (£lßl2 4s 8d), were actually tried and £1735 Os 7d (£1747 3s Sd) -was recovered. Forty-two (18) of these cases were brought by Europeans against natives, representing £SBO 10s 8d (£139 8s 9d); 30 (10) were actually tried, and £348 12s Id (£I2S Is 6cl) was recovered. There were- two (one) plaints brought by natives against. Europeans, and one (none) was tried and £lO recovered. In cases in which Europeans only Were concerned, ‘216 (205,) plaints were entered and recovery of £2591 17s 3d (£2706 16s 8d) was sought. One hundred and thirteen (118) cases were tried, representing £1644 4s 5d (£1674 3s 2d), and £1376 8s 6d (£1619 2s 2d) was recovered. In criminal offences 21 (35) warrants were issued in respect of males and two (two) in respect of females. Summons cards were issued to 82 (57) males and three (three) females, making a total of 108 (97), of which one male was a juvenile. Eleven (9) distress warrants were issued, and 8 (4) warrants of committal executed. No writs-of arrest were issued in either year. Summonses and other processes served bv the bailiff totalled 206 (168), and 15 (14) warrants were executed. Fees and fines totalled £384 9s (£340 7s). There were 7 (11) civil sittings before a stipendiary magistrate, and 7 (8) criminal sittings. Sittings presided over by justices of the peace totalled none (2) civil and 17 (1.7) criminal.
