CRICKET IN HAWERA.
THE COUNCIL’S HELP ACKNOWLEDGED. The great asistancc given to cricket by the Mayor and the council was stressed by several speakers at the cricket social last evening. Mr Monaghan said he was pleased to see the Mayor took such a keeu interest in the welfare of the young men. He thanked the council for its great help to the game, and specially mentioned Cr. J. M. Townsend, chairman of the Reserves Committee, who had generously met the cricketers whenever they ha.l asked for work to be done. His help they most emphatically acknowledged. Mr McCarthy also remarked on the help given by the ‘ council, which had resulted in 'their having a playing area Which, when the wickets were improved, would be equal to any in New Zealand. He added also that negotiations were in progress to procure a heavy roller arid a good soil for top dressing, with which they would be able to produce really good wickets. Mention was also made by Mr Monaghan of the help given by Mr Lay, who was in charge of the Park. The prospects for next season altogether looks very bright.
