STATE GOVERNORS
ENGLISH APPOINTMENTS. THEIR VALUE STRESSED FINANCIAL POINT OF VIEW. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, April 14. The Morning Post states that England has a special interest in the appointment of the Governors of the Australian States which the Australian agitators in favour of local nominees overlook. Huge loans are floated in London on advantageous terms through the Trustee Act and renewals are never questioned, whereas foreign lenders might easily refuse to renew except on onerous terms. English lenders are happy to lend, at a comparatively low rate’ to British Dominions where the King is represented by English Governors. but it is doubtful whether there would be the same confidence if local men were' Governors.
Australia has supreme confidence in herself and her superiority, which is healthy, but it leads to complications if over-asserted. It is noteworthy that the Australian Labour Party has never used the referendum to test this question of the appointment of Governors.
