RELEASE OF SLAVES.
EXPEDITION IN BURMA
In December last a small expedition was despatched under Mr. T. Bernard, of the Burma Frontier Service, to secure the release of the slaves. still held captive in the Huk Wang valley. Generous terms were offered to the masters, and it is now announced that arrangements have been made for the release of nearly all the slaves. The owners appear well satisfied with the prices paid for the redemption of their captives, many of whom are remaining with their masters, to whom they have become attached. ' It is hoped that another result of the expedition will be to bring home to the Naga chiefs and other residents, of the valley the Government’s determination ' to stamp out both slavery and human sacrifice, and to cut off all supplies of victims from this side of the frontier.
