In order to forward the pursuit of .a study and the practice of forestry in schools, a conference - was held 1 --last week in Rotorua, which was attended by twenty-two agricultural instructors and inspectors from various parts of the North Island. Meetings were held at Whakarewarewa State Forest plantations, where; addresses and demonstrations were given, and practical work done under the direction of Mr P. M. Page, officer-in-charge, and his stalf. The representatives from Taranaki were Messrs Rod Synie (Hawera), Ridling (New Plymouth), and Dill Mackay (Stratford), agricultural instructors, and t-he three Taranaki inspectors, Messrs' McKenzie, Ballantyne and Griffin. . Mr Synie, who has been a pioneer in the work of forestry, reports that all were much impressed with the work done, and he'is convinced that it will do much to stimulate interest in. the subject in the schools of Taranaki. To some; of the representatives at the conference the work was quite new. Mr Svme was muck impressed with the excellent instruction given by a Maori member of the staff of the plauta-tions, who showed a natural gift of imparting information. The conference was altogether most successful and the time spent there by the visiting instructors should lead to a strong 'advance in the work of ‘forestry in the schools, a study which has been acknowledged to be- of great value-to children, especially in. the country schooj, and in which South Taranaki has shown a special interest.
