TRENTHAM MEETING
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Maecenas.)
WELLINGTON, April 13. Recent rains have improved the race track at Trentham, which gives promis|> of being first-fclass for tomorrow’s racing. Although Perle de Leon appears as an acceptor for two events on the programme, he is a certain runner for the High-weight Handicap, in which race he will have the valuable services of L Morris, and he. should be a good favourite. *, Star Stranger, which worked remarkably well this morning, looks attractive for the St. Leger. Of a number oF useful two-year-olds in the Plunket Nursery, Rascal and Elthein will have plenty of support. Alyson went well at the Canterbury meeting, and has admirers. With his penalty Grand Knight will have to (carry 10.1 in the (’North Island Challenge Stakes, but even this load’ will be made light of by this great galloper. ; Naturally, where such a. number of good ones are brought together as in the Thompson Handicap, the race bears an open appearance. Consequent on running a mile a couple of mornings ago in 1.41 Rapine has come into favour for the race -Royal Divorce lias done all that was asked. W. Rayner will have a good pair jn Deluge and The Thorn, which will be favoured with first-class riders in L. ■Morris’ and M. McCarten respectively. In Listening Pest, Baldowa. and Los Ambus tbe South Island bolds a strong hand, while Hipo (which looks remarkably well) will have a good following. Possibly Royal Divorce and The Thorn will .run well.
On her good showing at Riccarton recently Piuthair is certain to he well supported for the Silverstream Hack Handicap, in which event tbe class is not strong. Receipt also ran consistently at the Canterbury meeting, and may give most trouble. The Railway Handicap field will not be as strong to-morrow as on many former occasions. Now that, R. Reed is to ride Civility that mare- may be favourite. Shirley is galloping well and can he relied on to do well. Orchid is in the market, and on Avondale form Merry Jest should be very prominent. Possibly Shirley .and Merry Jest may be a. reliable pair. A large field of smart hacks are engaged in the Tinakori Handicap, and it is a difficult race to sort out as to what- should be favourites ' Recent lacing points to Benzora,. Ballymoy II and Receipt as a promising trio.
