PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. At tlie ordinary meeting of the Patea County Council yesterday there were present Councillors J. Gibbs (chair), YV. G. Belton, J. It. Taylor, \V. Back, Alexander, W. H. Watkins, McDonald, and Sutherland. ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The engineer reported as follows: Main Road and General. —The earthwork contract on the W'averley racecourse deviation is complete. iho metal has been laid over practically the whole length of the deviation, the curve at the Waverlev end has been grouted. A length will also be grouted at the Patea approach and then the deviation opened for traffic. The contractor on the Wlienuakura hill earthworks is making good progress strengthening the shoulders, and eeal--111 o- lias been carried out over the length from the Whenuakura bridge towards Waver ley racecourse. Ihe plant will now move to Waitotara and work towards WaVferley. The other small sealing plant will, (when finished at Alton) work from the Patea end to meet the other plant carrying out the sealing where required. Otoia West.—Sealing on the Alton Gorge length, and on towards the Alton factory, has been carried out where required. Metal has been coming to hand at Manutahi, and has been carted out and spread on the Taumaha and Ginger Roads. Metal is now coming to hand at Ball Road for Makino and Hurley Roads, and will shortly be coming to hand at Kakaramea fox Spence Road. The grader has attended to Petch Road. A corner of the Wilford Road has been removed. Otoia East. Tlie. grader finished up in this district about a fortnight ago, work being carried out on the Matuku and Maori Roads. The surfaceman i-s attending to the blinding of the roads recently metalled. Waverlev R.idmg.—On the Kohi Road the metalling under the Government grant is complete (bottom coat), and nearly complete with, the top coat. The above remarks also apply to the Karahake Road. A small length on the Kohi Road near Hone’s has also been metalled, and the length in the Kohi Gorge between the water-trough and the bridge is in hand. A few chains of metal have been laid on Newlands Road. . The grader has finished up in this riding, the upper portion of the Kohi Road and the whole of the Karahake Rond having been completed. Moumahaki Riding.—On the Block IX hill (O’Reilly’s and Downe’s hills) the metalling commenced last season has been finished,'with the exception of about three chains, the metal for which is now on order. Metalling bus also been commenced under the Mangawhio separate rate between Hicks and the foot of the hill. This work is making good progress. The approaches for the Ngutuwera bridge have been commenced, and are now nearly complete. In company with the chairman the i>ortion of the Block VIH road mentioned at last meeting has been in_ spected. Pipes have been carted out to the Lakes length ■ Kapara Riding—ln' company with Or. Sutherland all the roads in the riding have been inspected, where everything is in very fair order. Work is now being concentrated on the Waimanuka saddle, and this coming winter the roads should he in very fair order. Two. loads of pipes and one load of sundries have been carted out V GENERAL.
Mr. C. A moil notified that Mr. F. Gawith would be his assessor in connection with his compensation claim against the council. Mr. J. R. Corrigan was appointed to act for the council. Tlie council decided to defend the case
Permission was granted to the Alton Dairy Company to inatal a kerbside petrol pump, subject to the usual conditions.
A Waverlev ratepayer requested that gates .and obstructing gorse: be. removed from the road connecting with the Tuke Rend, in order to help him in working his two properties. He asked for £'o toi £lO to be spent in work to cope with the spreading of sand drift, and said that if more was required he would find the money.—lt was resolved that the owner of land on which gorse had spread be instructed to. clear if. Mr A. Bredi e appeared on behalf of the contractor, Mr Vincent, for the Waverlev Road deviation, in connection with, th? removal of' spoil from hillocks and depositing iin the hollows. He explained that a good deal more had been required to fill up the hollows, and his claim /was for this amount. — After considerable discussion, it was decided that Crs. Belton. Alexander, Watkins and McDonald be a committee to go thoroughly into the matter, and to report fully to next meeting of the council. Three applications for refund, on heavy traffic licenses, on account of v.rv little use. having been made, of lorry, were held over for further information.' I Mr.W % R. S. Brewer, Waitotara, asked tlie council to form and grade the road between bis property and the adjoining owner. This bad been promised, and it was decided to receive the letter. ■ Details regarding of plants for underground storage, of petroi and regulations governing this storage Mere forwarded by the Chief 'iv nector of -Explosives. The Receiver of Land Revenue; advised that £57 11s 9d bad been placed to the credit of Land Fund Account for accrued thirds. Mr T. Foreman, Alton, asked for road Lading to his house to be. metalled, and that he .would pay one-third of the. cost of metalling three chains. —It was agreed to do the work when convenient.
