The Kirkpatrick Masonic Institute (formerlv the residence of the la.te Mr S. Kirkpatrick) was officially opened by Bro. Jesse Steer, District Grand Master of Westland and Nelson, in the presence of a, large and representative attendance of the Masonic fraternity. Bro. Steer explained that the home was by the terms expressed in the will of the esteemed Brother Samuel Kirkpatrick, to be founded on similar lines to the Royal Masonic Institute fob Girls in England. The Masonic Society was not a friendly society, nor was it a benevolent or a charitable institution, but it unfortunately happened Jl ' ■■ t- sometimes after sickness and death children a,re left in more, or I ess destitute condition. Brother Kirkpatrick. .realising this, and with the libera. l , hospitality which characterised his actions towards those dependent upon him and those in hi.s employ, left the residue of his estate, approximately £50.000. together with his beautiful horn-' with its present surroundings, for the -housing and education of girls leftin unfortunate circumstances. .
