PROHIBITION LAW
ALTERATIONS SUGGESTED.
REPEAL OR MODIFICATION AN INQUIRY TO BE HELD BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WASHINGTON, April 4. The Senate sub-committee on the Judiciary will open to-morrow, public hearings lasting for a fortnight upon six measures for the repeal or modification of the Volstead law. These promise to rival the most famous of Congressional investigations. Both “drys” and “wets” are marshalling .their forces, with Senators Bruce and Edge conducting the campaign for the latter and the AntiSaloon League for the former. There are hundreds of witnesses, including many important Governmental heads. These will testify on three questions which are: (1) The possibility of enforcement; (2) The social effects of prohibition; (3) Public sentiment concerning prohibition. . Various anti-prohibition measures are pending which ask fof modifications of the Volstead law by permitting beers and wines; the introduction of the Canadian system of sales of alcohol and liquor? under Government agencies in limited quantities; and a rational referendum. It is interesting to note in the lasvnamed connection, that the New York State Legislative is likely to authorise a State referendum upon prohibition on November 2. Senators Bruce and Edge, and General Andrews will be the first witnesses.
