RIGHT TO LIVE
THE FUNDAMENTAL DEMAND.
LABOUR’S FUTURE POLICY MOVE TOWARDS SOCIALISM. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 10.25 a.m. to-day. LONDON, April 5. Mr. J. W. Jewett, an ex-Gabinet Minister and president of the Independent Labour Party's conference, dedaed that the right to live was the fundamental demand.. Liabour must keep it in the forefront and boldly announce that the next Labour Government, with or without a majority in the House or Commons, was determined to take decisive action in this direction of Socialism. During the past five years, British workers’ wages had been reduced by the cblosisal total of 590 millions. An increase in the workers’ incomes of 5s weekly per child out of State revenues would increase the workers’ spending powers sufficient to remove all unemjployment. He agreed with the American Ambassador, Mr. Houghton, that European statesmen had learnt nothing by the war. We were back to pre-war rivalries. The present capitalist policies must inevitably drown Europe in a sea of blood, unless international Labour organises resistance. The party stood for internationalism as well as socialism in our time. —Aus.-N.Z. Gable Assn.
