STATE GOVERNORS.
“ENGLISHMEN BEST’’ DOWNING STREET VIEW. LONDON, March 12. The special representative of the Sydney Sun is able to disclose an authoritative Downing Street view of the memorial from Australian Labour Premiers regarding the appointment of Governors. It is pointed out that the British Government at present does not favour local appointments, as Englishmen are best suited for such positions, and it believes that Australia as a whole supports that view. It is emphasised that the Governor must be the King’s representative in more than name, and therefore it is essential that he be a man intimately knowing the King, Court circles, and Downing Street, qualifications no Australian could expect to possess. Australians had never objected to English Governors. On the contrary, they had highly appreciated and respected them, and had approved of the policy of appointing Englishmen of the best type able to assimilate Australia’s national spirit.
