PUBLIC SERVICE INVESTIGATION, * (BY TELKGKAPH. —FRKSS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, April 3. As a result of the setting up of the Public Service Economy Committeewhich was announced by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, at the end of last February, it is rumoured that there is a likelihood of longer hours haying to be worked throughout the Government departments. The Public Service Commissioner today stated that such rumours were entirely without foundation. The Economy Committee, he said, had to investigate the conditions existing' in about fifty departments and it would be from two to three months before it will be in a, position to make any recommendations. AN AUCKLAND FATALITY. AUCKLAND, April 5. Mrs Maud Mary Shannon, who was killed by falling from a bedroom (.window from the third storey of the Waitemata Hotel on Sunday morning, a few minutes earlier was talking to a boarder, and told him she would bring a cup of tea to his room. It is supposed that she overbalanced while trying to open a jammed window. FIRE AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, April 5. A fire in Manama Orescent destroyed a nine-roomed house owned by Dlwa-n Bros. and. occupied by Mrs. Grix. Two other ‘buildings’ were also damaged. YACHT FOIR. SYDNEY.
WELLINGTON, April 5. The auxiliary yacht Psyche has left for Sydney under Oapit, Townsend, of Auckland, and a crew of three. Dozens of applications to join her were refused.

The old opera house in Manners St., later known as the Tivoli, is to be replaced by a new theatre to hold 1500 people, and which will be used, for vaudeville and picture. The work of demolition begins next week. The owners are Williamsons Films, Ltd., a new company.
