Holman, former premier of New South Wales, in explaining to the Daily Mail the ease' with which the -State collects betting taxes equivalent to. os a, year for every man, woman and child. “Everything conspires to strengthen gamlbli rig’s- hold upon the national mind. It is finding a way -to new regions. To combat the instinct it will be necessary to breed a generation with new habits, pleasures, and outlook. At present such a. change is not even in sight. “The betting fax ha.s proved nearly ideal. It harasses no industry, and burdens no poor. The payments are voluntary, as any objecting citizen can escape altogether. Since my introduction of the tax there has been no reaction. Successive Governments have maintained and extended it. No- one has ever uttered a -word in favour of repeal.”
