SATURDAY’S RACING DESCRIBED (By Telegraph.—Special to Star.) PALMERSTON N., April 5. The Feilding Jockey Club opened its meeting in dry but very cold weather on Saturday, but it did not prevent the public from turning out in very large numbers. The recent rains had improved the race track, but it is still somewhat hard. The favourite for the Hurdles, Wilmoreana, gave a very poor exhibition and appeared to be lame. After the race, Apprentice Potter, who rode Royal Elm to victory, flourished his whip freely, causing that gelding to run in and interfere with some of the runners. For this offence lie was suspended for the rest of the day.
A useful field went out for the Ivawakawa Hurdles, bettors making Wilmoreana favourite, he carrying over twice the amount invested on the second choice (Pendennis), while next in order of favouritism was. Lark Hall and •Koauau. When the barrier rose Mata went out as pacemaker, his closest attendants being Wilmoreana, Pendennis and Ton Taua. At the stand Matu was still in front, and going out. of the straight Slump ran into second place, with Pendennis third. Half a mile from home Slump was the leader from Matu and Euchre, but a little later Euchre went to the lead and, making no mistakes at the next two jumps, went on to win well from Matu, which only beat Slump. Pendennis and Koauau were next. Dobbin was a decided favourite i'A' the Onga Hack, • with Bonideer, Beuzora and Starshell best supported of the others. When the tapes rose Dobbin and Billikins began best and over the early stages Bonideer, Great Day and Royal Land were their immediate followers. Racing into the straight Dobbin was just in front of Billikins, with Eden Hall, Bonideer, Royal Land and Great Day in a bunch on their quarters. Over the last half furlong Royal Elm came with a great, run, and just got up to beat Royal Land, while Benzora, with a fast late run, was a close third and Dobbin fourth. • A useful lot of horses were saddled up for the Manchester Handicap. Of them Martulla was the elect of the majority, but Vaward also had a big following and Alafic and The Lamb each counted on good support. From a good start Martulla. and All Marimba were the first to break the line, but passing the stand All Marimba, led from The Lamb, Sanctuary,. Vaward and Alarie There was little alteration in the leading positions til'lt.he five furlongs post ing positions till the five furlongs post, clear of .All Marimba, with Euphonium, Alarie and Vaward following. Racing into the straight The Lamb was just In front, of'All Marimba, but over the last furlong Bright Day.and Imperial'Spark came with runs, and in a good finish Bright Day beat All Marimba, by a neck, with Imperial Spark the same distance away third. Then followed The Lamb and Martulla. Of the dozen runners ‘for the Maiden Stakes, Mister Gamp had the largest following from Coma* and Mcmsaib. Pardon played up at the barrier, delay , ing the start, anti the tapes rose to an even send-off. Mponfaec began best from Mister Com]), but Paitonu soon raced to the lead and led into the straight from Moonface. Alarie ami Puawlmto. In the run to the judge. Paitonu ran on well to win easily from Moonface, while Acred, with a late run, just cut Puawlmto out of third place. Monaghan was favourite for the Taonui Hack, but Bennauce, New Moon and Bon March were also well supported. When the tapes rose Royal Mint, Bennance and Ohinemuri began well, but Koval Mint soon lost his position and Monaghan look up the running, followed by Sovena, Bennauce and New Moon. At the straight entrance Sovena was just leading Monaghan with Nov/ Moon closing on the leaders. In the run tip the straight a good rape toon place, and vigorously ridden, Sovena hung on long enough to just beat New
Moon, with Monaghan an indifferent third and Ohinemuri fourth. Rational was the favourite for the Mangaone Handicap, with Quillfire, Star Area and Orchid best supported of the other runners. Megalo caused a lot of trouble at the barrier, and eventually was hopelessly left when the tapes went up. Orchid began the quickest from Lady Bentinck and Gold Box. After going two furlongs Gold Box took charge, but only for a brief space, as Orchid went to the lead again after passing the half-mile post. At the home turn Lady Bentinck and Quillfire were his closest attendants. Quillfire closed on Orchid in the run to the post, but bored away from the whip and Orchid beat him by a head, with Rational and Lady Bentinck close up. Bettors made Rangi Sarto a big favourite for the Onepuhi Welter, with Panart, Lady Anstruther and . Kilmiss next in order of favouritism. Tlie tapes rose to an even start, Rangi Sarto leading past the stand from Inoe and Rapid Hire. Racing up the back stretch, Inoe went to the lead for a while, but approaching the half-mile post, Asleep had taken the lead with Killoch, Inoe, Rangi Sarto, Lady Anstruther all close up. Asleep had a slight lead at the straight entrance from Killoch, but the last-named finished too well for the opposition, and won nicely from Asleep, which had not much to spare over Rangi Sarto and Lady Anstruther.
Racing closed with the Haleombe Welter, and in a big pool on the totalisator Tiega was the prime fancy of the backers, but carried only seventy tickets more than Diogenes, while Glengariff was another thirty tickets away. Tiega began best, but Tonga totoa soon took charge from Glengariff, Tiega and Attractive. At the three furlongs post Glengariff took charge and, finishing gamely, won nicely from Tiega, with Attractive a good third. Then followed Tongatotoa and Iloa-d HBg. W AJRAHAPA MEETING. HOW THEY RAN. (Special to The Star.) WELLINGTON, April 3. The Wairarapa Easter meeting was opened in beautiful weather, but later a cold wind made matters a little unpleasant. There was a large attendance of holiday r -makers, and the track was hard and fast. Amongst those present was the Prime , Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates). Motion owed her success in the Maiden Hack to jumping out well, for she led with Trance to the turn and just lasted long enough. Grand National was going best at the end, and if he had jumped out clear would have been hard to beat. The favourite, Te Ivawana, had his chance extinguished at the start and he had all the bad luck of the race, finishing fourth. , _ King Broney cantered away from his opponents in the Mokai Welter. Red Fuchsia, Ard Finnan, Joyeuse, Santa Fe and King Broney were nearly on terms at the straight entrance, but, once in line for home, King Broney smothered his opponents. Red Fuchsia, Santa Fe and .Joyeuse all ran fair races, with Red Fuchsia the most likely one to improve. A late run on Royal Damon took him to the position of slightly better favourite than Peneus for the Railway' Handicap. Beaumont led Peneus, Blonde, First Acre and Royal Damon at the turn, but once in line Royal Damon came through to win easily by a length from Morose, who got up to beat Peneus by a head. Beaumont, Nadarino and Kilceit were next. Royal Damon was in all kinds of trouble in the early stages and would have been very unlucky if he had been beaten. Morose finished very well and so did Nadarino, who was a bad last at one stage. Peneus, with 9.13, was asked to win all the way on this turning course. Elthein "was backed for the two-year-old handicap as if the race was all over, but she just squeezed home from Hynanna, who finished very fast after being ridden with poor judgment. Royal Game, who led to the turn, was third just ahead of Hynanna Is bracket-mates. Hymill and Hymgreat. The Comedy King colt, David Garrick, made his first appearance, but was left at the. post. Hynanna should be good to follow. De Luxe, after a number of unlucky efforts, carried off the principal handicap. Five furlongs from home he was just behind Opa, Westbroke and Modern, and going to the turn was up with Opa ami Modern, with Westbroke heading the others. Archeen, who had re ceivod a very interrupted run, made fiis appearance in the straight and was Hying at tlie finish but could not reach Do Luxe and Opa, who were divided by' a length. Archeen was a head awiv third, just in front of Modern. Arolieen was a good thing beaten. Treshn m was beaten by his weight. Merry day and Degage are in need of a race. . Sir Moment, an outsider, stayed on too well in the Tuhitarata Welter, beating Killaddie, who also finished in front of the favourite, Sarty. With Sea Kist, these three were always in the van. Lightwood ran a poor race, being nearly last all the way and showing no dash whatever. Agitato came from almost last to first to win the Martinborough Welter. At the turn his chances looked hopeless. At this stage Royal Damon, Misgovern, Printemps and Fillette were well clear of the rest. Misgovern stopped badly at the dud, but there wore only inches between Agitato, Royal Diadem and Fillette.
Tho final event provided ri surprise, for Indian Sage and Dubious outclassed the field at the end. Dubious actually was the first to turn for home, and looked a winner until Indian Sage bore down on him and beat him" home by a length. Dubious was ridden without whip or spur. Thomona, although well backed, failed to run on after striking the gale. . Tannadees, who was unlucky at the start, was fourth and, ridden out, would have been close up.

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, SYDNEY, April 3.
The autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club was opened in brilliant sunshine. The course was a trifle on the dead side owing to the heavy rains early in the week. New Zealand had a few, representatives running. Double Escape showed up well ini the First Hurdle Race, and was lying third passing the stand the ( first time behind Gunnendah. One For All took the lead entering the back, and held that position till entering the straight, when Royal Howard, who was, always handy, came up and won rather easily.
