AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

ROSE AT WANGANUI. The 'prospect of seeing Randolph Rose in action was to some extent the cause of some 2,000 spectators assembling aft Cook’s' Gardens at Wanganui oil Saturday evening. Some fine performances were put up. H. Telfer of the Hawera Club competed in several of the events, but was unfortunate in not securing a, win. Ihe results were:

One mile handicap.—lt. Riose (ser) 1, CJ. Gibbons (80yds) 2, K. Johnston (90yds) 3. Also started: J. Piawson (90ydis), S. "AlcocJi (lOOyd's-), and B. Clark (190yds). . Tllie champion was giving away upwards of 190 yard's to some of the five other competitors in the big event of the evening, and 60 yards to Gibbons, who beat him off the same mark at Hawera last' season. With his long powerful stride, the champion got off the mark well and proceeded to overhaul the held. Pawson slackened up and paced him over tihe first half mile, when, he then pulled out. Rose covered the first quarter in 59. Going out of the straight the order was Clark, Aleock, Gibbons, Paw so n and 1 Rose, the scratch man having made up about fifteen .yards; on the limit men. The half mile was left behind in 2.10 1-5. Going round for the; last time, Gllark shill, led the field by 12 yards, Gibbons lying second, with Rose lying third four yards back. Johnston was 8 yards away fourth. Rose went after the field going round the back, where Gibbons shot to the front-, Closely followed by Johnston. The champion, left the latter behind near the pa.vinon, and caught Gibbons in the bend, but had only aibout a yard to spare coming into the .straight. He there put in.his usual final dash and- won pulling up by five yards. Gibbons' hung to the champion's heels well over the last fifty yards, and ran a splendid race to get -second place forty yards ahead, of Johnston. Clark was the only other competitor to -complete the course. The time, 4.271-5, was exceptionally good. 1,00 yardts handicap.—'First, heat: G, Broad (7yds) 1, J. T>. Morgan (8) 2. Heifer (31) 3.
