Carisbrook in the second venture lost six for 179, Dickinson carrying his bat for a brilliant 102 after about threequarters of an hour’s batting. SOUTH v. NORTH TARANAKI. A WIN FOR NORTH. INTERESTING PLAY. Keen interest was displayed in the match between South and North Taranaki, which formed practically the final for the season and “rang down the curtain” on the list of fixtures. The weather was fine hut cold, and not altogether too well suited for c icket. The scoring of both teams was good, and the display generally one of the most interesting of the season. A feature of the day’s play was the fine innings played by Bottrill, of the North, who in compiling 98 gave an attractive display of cricket and one of the best seen this season. He was unlucky not to get his century, just touching one on the leg side and being snooped up by Cromhie behind the wickets. Fugled on. Gibson and Haughton also played well for the winners*. South opened badly, and had six wickets down for under 30 runs, hut then Beeche.v. Cromhie, Cheevers and Pratt made a fine stand, the last two wicket partnerships being responsibel for a lot of runs. Cheevers especially is* to he heartily commended for his excellent innings. He combined sound defence with good hitting powers, and was unbeaten when the innings closed. Had he been able to got anyone to stay with him the runs required might have been scored. THE PLAY. North opened first, Nasmith and Nicoll both hatting confidently. AVhen they went Eggleton and Bottrill commenced a partnership that put on no less than 74 runs. The latter went on with Gibson until he was two short of the century, when he was caught off Giblin. Gibson scored 22, and the only other to make runs was Haughton, who was tun out after getting a
similar number. The innings closed for the very good total of 247. South opened with Alonaghan and Penny. The former had made 11 when he put hie foot in front to one from Eggleton. Penny and Lambert went to good catches, and Eggleton’s effective bowling, who dismissed Lay for a duck, clean bowled, and afterwards got McCarthy with a trimmer, aided in getting rid of six of the best bats for a small total. Beechey, batting solidly and aided by Crombie, stopped the rot, and put on a good number. Off one over of Eggleton’s he scored three sixes- and a four. Then Cheevers came in to give a brilliant inning's, and with Pratt took the total to 180 before the latter was caught by Saxton. Giblin. the last man, added five, and the innings closed for 185, Cheevers being not out for a well-played 40.
